Sewing machine recs?

If you sew what kind of sewing machine would you recommend for a beginner?

Thanks a bunch

Re: Sewing machine recs?

  • Great Question! I have been meaning to ask the same thing. Smile

  • I have a basic Kenmore, from Sears, it isn't super fancy, but it definatly gets the job done.
  • I have pretty much only sewn on Singer sewing machines.  Honestly, I don't think it really matters what brand you pick.  It kind of depends on what you want to do with it, so you know what features you want.  For a beginner, I would probably just pick something really basic with a good price.  They have some at Target that are a decent deal.

  • I have a basic Janome machine. I have been really happy with it. I purchased it while I lived in Omaha so with it I got a few lessons on how to use it which I thought was really nice. I think it is a fairly common practice to get a few intro classes if you buy a machine from a sewing shop, but I am not familiar with the DM area sewing stores.

  • I also have a Kenmore that was handed down to me from my grandmother that works well. The Crafts board has addressed this question in their FAQs link and it has some good information too.

  • I have a Janome and love it. I had a cheap Brother and it was really terrible. I'd just suggest looking in the stores and reviewing them online. All the brands are good, but not all the machines. Some of the really cheap ones won't last long or will just frusterate you more than you need :-) My first cheapo brother one had the thread get all balled up all the time, it was definitely worth it to spend the extra money.

But like I said before...just read lots of reviews online!

  • I've had a Janome before that I loved. Right now I have a Singer Simple. I've been sewing since I was in elementary but I still just like to stick to something basic. Both of mine came with instructional DVD's that were very easy to understand. Every sewing machine is a little different in how to thread the needle, load the bobbin etc.

For just starting out I'd pick something basic, simple and cheap.
