Need motivation - please help
I am completely disgusted with myself. I've been watching my weight balloon over the past year (I was overweight before, but it's just gotten soooo much worse). I need to get myself under control. My doctor's advice: don't eat more than you burn. Thank you Doc. I get the concept, its the implementation of it that I can't seem to do.
Any advice or motivating thoughts would be appreciated.
Re: Need motivation - please help
Do you currently exercise? I had to try a bunch of different kinds of exercise before finding what I enjoyed enough to do on a regular basis. So don't feel bad if you're not a runner, or whatever.
Even little things like taking a walk at lunch or after work start to add up as you add them on a regular basis.
One thing that I have to tell myself is "motivation is overrated." If you wait till you really feel motivated you might never start. Making a schedule and sticking to it helps you get going.
Do you track calories at all? I am HORRIBLE at that, but there are apps you can get for free, like My Fitness Pal, which are good for tracking.
I signed up for a 10k to motivate myself to start running again.
Can you sign up for a 5k? You can find a race that supports a cause you're interested in and have something to work towards. You don't have to run the whole thing. You can walk or jog.
I find that when I work out more, I want to eat better.
Good luck!
What is your main issue with food?
Portion control? Stress eating? Bored eating? Empty calories?
My big issue is snacking, which i suppose is a combo of the last three. Snack food is just so yummy. I know what the issue is, its just getting me to the point of saying no when I start heading for the pantry.
I go through exercise jags. I will be really good at doing it for 3 weeks and then miss one time and just stop. I have a membership at a gym and am interested in some of the classes there. I think if I had a class with a scheduled time to go, I would be more likely to keep going. I'm just too much of a baby to go by myself the first time. After the first time I would be ok. Its the whole not knowing what to expect thing that gets to me. I live 45 min+ from everyone I know, so I don't feel right about asking someone to go with me. My husband would if I made a big stink about it. I might just have to get on his case. Or just put on my big girl panties and go.
I guess I'm kind of worried about judgemental people at the gym. I don't have the best self esteem and would feel like crap about not being able to make it through a work out when in a room full of strangers.
As far as counting calories, I did Weight Watchers a few times and always do well when I'm on it. When I stop, I can't control myself. I just get overwhelmed when I can't figure out how many calories something is.
In this case, you have to start at the store. Don't buy unhealthy snacks. If it's not in the pantry, you won't eat it. It will take some adjusting, but you can do it. If you tell us what you like to snack on, we might be able to find you some healthier alternatives.
As far as exercising, do you have a friend that you could do something with? I am the type that needs an extra push and it really helps if I have a friend that I have committed to doing something with. I can let myself down much easier than I can let someone else down. I suspect this might be the case for you, too?
See a nutritionist for help with meal planning, get a balanced diet and keep the calories in line with losing weight.
Get a personal trainer or at least an exercise buddy to go walking on a regular basis.
www.sparkpeople.com a great site - lots of inspiration, chat boards, help with low cal meals, etc.
My biggest thing is portion size. A few years back, I realized that I was sick of feeling like complete and utter shyt every time I ate because I stuffed myself to the gills. NOTHING feels better than eating the perfect amount of a delicious food. So you enjoy it and can still move afterwards.
I also get to the gym by finding something I will look forward to. I found out that Gilmore girls is on at 11am weekdays, and that had me going to the gym 5 days a week... because I loved the idea of having an hour break from work where I got to zone out, watch my favorite show and just have some me time.
Currently Reading: Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
I have a pretty good addiction to sugar and fat...this is a highly individual thing, but the only way I've been able to lose a lot of weight is to cut those things out, almost completely. It's not for everyone
Making some short-term and long-term goals are always good motivators. Gym three times this week, do an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill, etc. Dessert only once this week, check. Track my food intake this week, check. Stuff like that. Feel good about your progress instead of beating yourself up for not being perfect!
