So, Hugo's...

We had a really, really great time!  The atmosphere was cozy, the waiter was awesome and it was completely unpretentious, which was one of my worries.  We actually learned upon being seated that they were only offering a six-course blind tasting menu that evening (half off the regular price, at only $45/pp and you could add a half glass of wine paired with each course for $35 additional).  I knew they offered it and have always wanted to try it, but figured I'd just order off the regular menu, since I'm trying to be careful about what I eat right now - plus, I knew it would be a bit of an event, time-wise, and didn't think anyone else I was with would do it.  So, I was kind of insanely thrilled when I learned we had no choice; DH less so...he is not an adventurous eater and doesn't eat seafood.  Well, I think the first four courses were seafood focused and everyone enjoyed every last bit.  I was stuffed, just drinking water all night - I cannot imagine drinking three glasses of wine in addition, but I think it would have been a lot of fun - our waiter seemed really knowledgeable when it came to wine.

Anyway, I highly recommend it, especially for a special occasion.  If you're looking to try the tasting menu, maybe call ahead and see when they offer it - I thought I had read that they only do the half-price deal mid-week, but clearly, that wasn't the case.  If you do go, let me know - I'd love to compare menus!

  • *butting in* Hugo's is great! So glad you enjoyed it.  I have only been once and don't remember exactly what I had, but remember I LOVED it! I had a Vodka Root  Beer which sounds nasty but was so delicious!
  • Yay, thanks for letting me know how it went - sounds amazing!! I am even more stoked to go now! We have actually been thinking of doing the tasting menu. Matt has wanted to go there for a while.

Now I have questions!! Hehe. Did you have/need reservations? Was the $35 for wine per person or total? I don't know if I could drink 3 glasses of wine oh my goodness. Did the tasting include dessert? (We are thinking of trying the Bar of Chocolate after if not.)

  • I made reservations about two weeks out  because we had been trying to plan to get together with this other couple for a long time, so once we had a date, I just went to OpenTable.com to book (plus, I like getting the points on there.)  I think you would probably want to make a reservation just because we were there for almost three hours.  I'm pretty sure there site states that reservations are recommended, as I can imagine the planning that goes into serving every table well-timed courses.

The $35 was per person - I think the actual tasting menu was 50% off, but the wine portion was full price.  I just checked the website and they offer the tasting menu at half price every day they are open, through April.  Really, I love wine, and clearly I wasn't going to do it anyway, but if you are a mixed drink person, they have a really fun menu for those, too, so you may want to check the website menu for that, too.

Dessert was included - there was a cheese course, a larger dessert and a cookie course.  Thinking back, there were more than six courses, no doubt.  Insanity.

Oh, I hope you go - I want to discuss the courses in more depth, but I don't want to ruin anything :)

  • We have reservations for Friday evening!!! Big Smile

Now I have to figure out what to wear, haha.

  • Yes, I worried about this, too...I wound up just wearing nice jeans, a fancier top and heels.  Thankfully the other gal we went with wore something similar, and we were totally fine.  So, I'd say up to you - I'd normally be inclined to wear something nicer to a place like that, but it was so crappy out that day.   There were people wearing clothing from all ends of the spectrum, as is the usual in Portland :)
