Has Anyone Completed ALC?

T was just told a spot opened up financially for his unit to send him to ALC.  What can he expect?  He doesn't have any details of where his school would be but doing some Googling it looks like it would be Ft. Jackson.

Re: Has Anyone Completed ALC?

  • J is working on his online classes for it right now.  Then, he goes to San Antonio for 6 weeks this spring.  The online classes he has have a lot of MOS specific content.  There are a few lessons that have been leadership based.  There have been a few essays to write and quite a bit of message board posting.  All have to be done on a time schedule.

  • Thanks!

I know there are 2 phases...is the online considered the 1st phase and than the SA portion in the 2nd phase?  Briefly looking at the dates and the way they're broken up on the info T received it looks like there are 2 phases at Ft. Jackson, each 2 weeks and there's been no mention of an online course from his unit.

  • J's first phase is the online course and the second is in SA.  It may be different for different MOSs.  J reclassed from 11B to a medical field almost 2 years ago.

  • What's his MOS? Like C said, it depends on MOS. Phase 1 is the same for everyone(basic NCO stuff on-line) and then phase 2(or mine has 3 phases) is MOS specific stuff. Mine would be in Fort Gordon. He should go prepared to do height/weight and take a PT test with his unit 30 days prior. A PT test isn't required at the school house anymore if the course is less than 8 weeks. That said, that doesn't mean that some schools aren't still doing the PT test, just it's not a graduation requirement. Depending on his MOS, I can find out more. Is he looking to go to the AD ALC or a Reserve school?

  • He's a 42A.

I'll definitely pass along the PT...although he's never had issue with it, doesn't hurt to practice.

He's going to AD school and they'll count it as his AT for this year.

Ah. Ok. It appears the one at Fort Jackson is an all encompassing one. So it's his Phase 1 & 2 combined. It's 6 weeks 5 days.  It's a resident course so they'll put him up in lodging and provide meals(most likely).

There are a few reserve classes that he could go to. Two, two week phases and they also count towards AT. I don't blame him if he wants to do the one shot one kill though. That's how I'll do mine, if they ever let me go.

Yeah he'll definitely want to get it done in one shot...so will his leadership.  They rely on him for too many things to have him gone for a few drills.

  • He has a ton of options b/c the school house at Jackson has a bunch of classes every year. Idk how full they are or how many slots his state has but if he wants to get in before the end of the FY he should submit his choices soon. I've tried to go for two years but b/c of the budget(and I'm not an E-6) they won't let me go. Super annoying.

ETA - I just talked to a friend of mine. She went to the reserve course in Camp Parks, CA. She did PH 1&2 back to back, 4 weeks and she loved it. She the said it was laid back. CA was fun and pretty. She said she did SLC at the one in Texas and the instrcutors were much better than CA and it too was laid back. She said the one at Jackson will be with a bunch of AD guys so it's a bigger class and probably a lot more by the books stuff.

I think his biggest issue is budgeting within the unit.  An E-5 claimed the slot before he did so she was going to go but then backed out yesterday so his MSG called him and offered it to him.  It's been sent up to S-3 and they're waiting to hear back.

I hope he gets the slot he's shooting for...this way he'll have the training he needs so he'll be ready to apply for E-7 when his time in grade is up and he's eligible for promotion.  Knocking out AT now instead of June also benefits our social calendar.

Oh well hell, that's awesome if the slot and money are already allocated! Hopefully it all works out.
