Pep Talk Needed (Long and self-involved)

I've betched about my current job on here enough for everyone to know how bored I am.  The biggest problem with being bored is that it's incredibly comfy.  My boss is really nice to me and I get paid a decent wage.  Plus, change is scary!  Thus, here I sit on my @ss everyday, hating it and betching.

I saw a job online just now that is for a medical based (want) non-profit orginization (want), in a journalistic capacity (have the degree), for more money than I make now (I certainly wouldn't have a problem with that).

Aaaaand I'm petrified to even apply.  I've been sitting on my butt so long doing menial tasks that I have no idea what I'm capable of anymore.  I haven't been challenged in awhile and I'm scared!  What if it's over my head? What if I'm a complete moron and don't know it? What if 10+ years of secretarial mediocrity have entirely killed all of my other skill sets?

Talk me into it!  It's just applying, right?  No harm.  Might as well.  I know you guys don't really know me well enough to judge how I would be at a job, but I need encouragement.  It helps so much to hear nice things from other ppl, ya know?

Here's the job description, if anyone is interested: The Content Strategist participates in and contributes to project teams to determine direction of all communications to AAFP members. Content strategy team deliverables include development of an editorial calendar and core messaging to support the strategic objectives identified by the AAFP mission areas. The Content Strategist also works closely with staff in IT, CDO and other divisions to provide direction on the implementation and execution of the plans developed by the content strategy teams.

Re: Pep Talk Needed (Long and self-involved)

  • You could do anything you wanted to do. I don't think that of many people.
  • I really, really suggest that you at least apply.  There's no harm in it...it doesn't mean that you're actually going to change jobs.  All you're doing is seeing what else is out there - that's not scary!

I didn't update here, but I actually got that job that I thought I had the worst interview ever for.  I'm exactly 1 week into it and LOVE it.  I was in the same position (well, minus the good boss)...getting bored doing the same thing day in and day out.  Shaking things up was intense and I'm still not 100% comfortable with the new job (duh, I've been in it for only a few days) but the change has been fab!

Damn you Nest for screwing up my siggy!

    This.

Visit The Nest! Visit The Nest!
  • Apply! The worst they can say is "No". You definitely need to find something that challenges you, and it's okay to be a little scared at the idea of moving to something more involved!

    You can do it!

Like you, I feel like more of my brain cells die every day that I work at this job.

  • I totally get how you're feeling. Apply, see if you get an interview. If you get an interview, go for the interview. If they offer you the job, then freak out! :-)

  • Do it!

image handsome boy modeling school was the best 60 dollars I ever spent. If it wasn't for handsome boy modeling scholl I would not be the modle I am today.
  • There is no harm in applying! I know that change is scary, but don't think of it as changing jobs just yet. Just take it one step at a time. Apply. If you get an interview--think of it as just an interview. There's no need to decide whether or not to take the job before you've even applied.

    So, in short, apply!

  • The only way you are guaranteed a no is if you never give it a shot. You are better than just sitting there and not even trying. At least apply and see how it goes from there.

    Yes

  • If you get an interview doesn't mean you have to take the job! Remember, during an interview, you are also sort of interviewing them as well to see if you would like working there! Change is scary, but sometimes it can be good! Do it and good luck!

  • Apply!  You're not committing to anything other than show9ng your interest.  Who knows, you may interview and love it.  Or you may interview and hate it.  I would hate for you not at least apply and then look back and wonder what could have been.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Go ahead and apply! If you don't get an interview, at least you already know you're brave enough to take the first step and get out there. If you do get one, you rock their socks and show them how awesome you are! Good luck, put in that application and keep us updated!

  • I definitely say to do it. That way, when you look back, it will never be a "what if" because of something you didn't do. If you are that miserable with your job, this seems like the perfect opportunity to break free, and start applying. This job seems like a good fit from you (at least the way you have told it) and it will certainly challenge you more than your current job. I definitely think you should do it, especially so you never have the regret of not taking action. I say go for it and good luck!!

    Duff--congrats!! That's awesome!!

  • I applied.  *breathes out*  I'm not expecting much, though.  Careerbuilder.com likes to kill your dreams quickly nowadays, it seems.  They sent me a "competition summary" saying this many ppl applied, their average experience is this, this percentage of them have Master's degrees, this many of them are willing to give the interviewer a bj, this many of them are Olympic Ballerinas and everyone loves them...blah blah blah...

  • You should totally do it!

I'm in a "comfortable" job too, but it's not something that is my passion.  I would love to break out and do something else, but it's scary to leave a good job, especially while so many people are unemployed.  The problem is, I don't really know what I want to do, at least you have that covered!
