Crochet resources

I've been crocheting baby blankets for a long time, but they are very, very basic.  I just learned what I've been using is a double crochet (my college roommate taught me how to do it!)  I'd love to learn more complicated stiches/patterns and I also want to learn how to do hats.  I've tried a couple of Youtube tutorials, but they move so fast I get confused.  Can anyone recommend a good tutorial/book/website, etc.?  I'd really appreciate it!

Re: Crochet resources

  • If you can find a class, that would be ideal (at least for me--I need to have someone there to show me). Other than that, I've found that some pattern books have extensive instructional sections that helped me learn most of the stitches (there are about a half dozen that you need to know).

  • My recommendation is to find a simple pattern you like and learn the stitches you need to know to make it.  Several pattern resources are linked in the FAQ at the top of the board, but Ravelry's site is the granddaddy of 'em all.

IMO, learning how to read/follow the pattern is the hardest part.  I like LionBrand's patterns for beginners (available on their site as well as on Ravelry) because they're well-written and include a glossary at the end of each one to explain the shorthand.

I used YouTube and a variety of books from the library when I was learning.  I'm sure some videos are better than others, and you should search for videos on specific stitches.  Between those two things, I think you'll be well on your way since you already have some experience, though you could always take a class, too.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I have become addicted to this blog lately: http://attic24.typepad.com/ I L o v e the colors that she uses! Her tutorials are pretty good also. She also has a pattern on stitch nation that I just started... It has been fun! http://www.stitchnationyarn.com/Patterns/blanket-statement.html

  • I bought the book "I taught myself to crochet" from Joann Fabrics. I'm just learning, but it's all I used and I can do several stitches. It includes something like 16 patterns for blankets, bags, scarves, and other randoms. Difficulty from easy to hard. It also came with several sizes of hooks.
