Vent: Sort of irritated with DH

DH is already in China and has been since the beginning of January. He's also made a total of 5 trips in the last year and half. Now that I am flying out he's suddenly made promises to several of his local friends that I will bring them Clinique beauty products. Which, I really would be happy to do, but at the same time, I'm moving to China and I already have every inch of 3 suitcases filled. Now I keep telling DH I don't know if I will have room and he says he thinks I over-packed and couldn't I just take out a few things and leave it at my parents. Am I wrong to feel a little miffed that he wants me to remove some of my own stuff to bring stuff to his friends? And W(hy)TH didn't have to bring any of these beauty products in his suitcase during any of his 5 trips over there?!

Also, I was planning on just trying to get at the duty free in Shanghai, but DH said the one at the exit is pretty small, so I don't think I can count on that. Looks like I'll be heading to mall today. Ugh!

Sigh, whining vent over. Time to re-organize my suitcase and make room.

Re: Vent: Sort of irritated with DH

  • I'd be annoyed too.

I was going to suggest just picking it up at duty free...

I'm actually surprised they can't find Clinique at a shopping centre there, we had a Clinique counter in Saigon.

  • I understand your frustration, but I'd get the clinique stuff and do it anyway. Bringing western goodies is a great way to make expat friends and it will be very, very much appreciated. You'll understand their desperation and appreciation of something so ridiculous after a few months there.

Also, it would suck to have to tell someone that your wife can't bring it because she doesn't have room. Perfectly reasonable and justifiable, but there's kind of an unwritten rule about being western product mules for other expats when in China, and I'm surprised that clinique products is all that they are after!

Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!

Because he?s a man. But I understand your frustration. On the other hand, how much space do the products really take up? Unless it?s a big bottle of clarifying lotion, most of their products are pretty small. Just take them out of the boxes and tuck the ones you can into your carry-on and I?m sure you?ll be fine.

And as Tofu said, it?s a great way to make new expat friends, hopefully.

  • I'm definitely doing it and I feel better now that I've rearranged my luggage. I think my problem stemmed from him telling me to just unpack stuff. And it is some of the larger stuff, clarifying lotion and face wash. He said his friends said the cost is much higher and the product isn't exactly the same. I don't know about all that, but I will be sucking it up and buying/packing all of it. With a smile, to boot :)

  • It's like jail and cigarettes.

You need them to get ahead in the system.

    lol

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • Yeah, it sucks, but I'd try to just put on a smile and do it. I probably would have complained loudly to DH about it, though. And be careful of following the suggestion to put it in your carry on if you're bringing liquids :-)

  • Men just don't understand how much stuff we, as women, need to pack ;)

What about buying it at the duty free in the US?

    Good luck with the move.

    Winning.

  • I would be annoyed too, especially since it's big stuff. But if it will earn you brownie points, you'll probably feel it's worth it after the fact (:
