have you ever frozen and then used cilantro?

I use it a lot.  But it always seems that I never use a whole bunch when I buy it.  I feel that dried cilantro that I purchased, tastes like nothing.  I'm wondering if I could freeze what I don't use next time, and then add it to a recipe, what it would taste like.  Has anyone tried this?

  • I've done it once or twice & it's been fine. My mom would freeze fresh parsley all the time, so I figure it's the same idea.

  • I do it all the time.  I have read that you can use the stems too, so when I buy it I just throw the whole bunch in the freezer and when I use it I just cut off what I need.  I do the same with parsely and basil I take off the stem and freeze the leaves in a chinese food container.  Fresh herbs are so much better than dried for some things so I like to have these on hand for when I make quesadillas (cilantro), meatballs (parsely) and sauce (basil).
  • yup! we have a big veggie and herb garden eveny summer, so we freeze all kinds of stuff. we just rinse them, and stick them in the ziploc freezer bags. right now, we have a baggie of basil, one of parsley, and one of cilantro in the freezer. we just pull out whatever we need when we're cooking. works great! peppers freeze really well, too- we just cut them up and put them in the freezer ziplocs. great for throwing in with sausage and peppers, chicken cacciatore or just in a pasta sauce.
  • So how does this work? You just put the bunch, after it's washed, in a freezer bag? No paper towel or anything to absorb moisture? I imagine that when you defrost the parsley or cilantro the leaves would have water on them and discolor/turn black. Am I not thinking about this the right way?
  • Trader Joe's sells cubes of frozen herbs - including cilantro. I know that doesn't answer your question, buti find its just as good as fresh.

I washed the whole bunch, let it air dry on a towel for a bit, then put it in a zipoloc bag w/ a paper towel. Then you can just clip off what you need.
