is breastfeeding a valid reason for jury duty postponement?

I got called for jury duty in mid-June when I was 38 weeks pregnant.  I went but they sent me home, the woman's exact words were, "I don't know how to deliver a baby, ma'am, you're going home."  I just got called again for March (I thought I bought myself 3 years... guess not...) - does BFing exempt/postpone me again?  I don't mind serving, but I'd have to pump and I don't know what the deal is with that.

Re: is breastfeeding a valid reason for jury duty postponement?

  • I postponed twice because I had a newborn child at home. Never said I was BF or gave any details beyond that and I was excused both times. Havent been called again since
  • a friend of mine showed up for jury duty when her daughter was 3 months old-- informed them they would need to provide a space for her to pump-- and they had no such space for her, so they sent her home and postponed her date

  • I returned the card in the mail explaining that I was exclusively nursing.  I received a letter that I was granted a postponement.
  • yes it should. i called and said i had a baby that i breastfeed exclusively and they excused me.
  • if suitable accomodations cannot be provided, then yeah, it most definately should be.  and honestly, unless its a new building, i really can't imagine them being able to provide you with space bc most court houses are busting at the seams...
  • Did you actually show up at the courthouse for duty and the clerk sent you home because of your condition?  If so, that should count as "duty."  I would pursue and say you should be exempt for 3 years from  June.

Yep - waited on line and everything, the clerk dismissed me.  I don't know how to go about that though... just call the number on the form?

  • In Essex County I was granted a postponement.  I wrote on teh card that I would be exclusively breastfeeding until November of that year.  I received a new summons November 1st!!!
  • Did you sign anything or give you a "receipt?"  The act of showing up counts as time served and you should be in the system.  I would call the number and ask.

Unless it is a different court system, then the 3 year thing doesn't count.
