traveling with 1 year old

we are moving and need to fly cross country with a one year old. we purchased him his own seat so that we would have extra room. He does not need his own seat until he is 2. I am trying to decide if it is better to drag a car seat across the airport and put him in his carseat for when he naps and hope he naps longer because he will be snuggled in his carseat, or to check the car seat and hold him and have the extra room when he is awake and fidgeting. He does not like his carseat in the car when he is alone, but is generally ok if he is being entertained by someone.

He does not fit into his infant carseat so it would be a convertible car seat that he would be in.

thanks for your input

Re: traveling with 1 year old

  • Bring the car seat. Then you can put him in it if you need to or hold him if you need to. The only thing I would caution is that around 18 months we had to stop traveling with the car seat because ds would kick the seat in front of him.

  • We've travelled with DS quite a few times and always buy him a seat,  we check the carseat.  The first time we brought the infant carseat on and it was a pain, we were told it had to be in the window seat which stole a lot of room from the middle seat - we ended up gate-checking it that trip and have never regretted not bring it on the plane.  He was just over a year on our last flight and did quite well belted in his seat for most of the flight, plus there are travel harnesses you can buy that will help secure them.  Personally, I'd check it.

  • I would bring it, DD was in her converitble car seat (rear facing)  - Britax Roundabout - on a flight at 15 months and it was much easier for her, she fell asleep easily and slept most of the flight.

There was a web site/forum I read to make sure we knew the regulations, and how to install the seat correctly. If I can remember I will post it.

Also to get it thru the airport, we put it in the stroller, and wheeled it, while I carried DD.  Then gate checked our stroller.
