I said I'd give you an update of how our one day at Disneyland went, so here it is!

It was a Thursday, and there were no crowds. Lots of people, yes. But the longest wait for a ride was 30 minutes, and it was a fast pass one anyway. Most were 10-15 minutes.

We had a park-hopper ticket, and thank god. Random rides would shut down for random times, so while we started out in California Adventure, the big roller coaster there wasn't open. We were done with everything else we wanted to do within an hour.. so we went to Disneyland, and then came back later. We were never able to figure out why some of the rides would shut down. They all opened back up at some point through out the day and we were able to do everything we wanted (expect the Matterhorn which is being refurbished).

I really recommend the park-hopper if you just want to do the big rides. We bounced back and forth tree times between the parks. We went on Screamin' (the big roller coaster at California Adventure) five times throughout the day.

California Adventure has a lot of attractions still under construction, so it is really broken up, doesn't flow well, and you have to walk to opposite sides of the park for the "big" attractions. If you only want to do one park and not both, I would recommend only doing Disneyland. It had a lot more going on, and there is just more attractions in general.

We didn't do any of the shows, nor did we stay for World of Color, so no recommendations there.

Our favorite rides:

California Adventure -
Screamin' (the big roller coaster)
Mickey's Fun Wheel (the swinging gondolas are actually very disorienting. There is NOTHING to hold on to, and it looks like you're little cage is just going to slide right off and drop into the water. The first time I was screaming and closing my eyes and generally freaking out. It was WEIRD)
Tower of Terror
Soarin' (we didn't do it this time, but we did the same ride in Disneyworld, and it was really cool)
Silly Symphony Swings (kiddy, but fun)

Disneyland -
Big Thunder Mountain
Space Mountain
Pirates
Haunted Mansion
Indiana Jones
Splash Mountain (though I was in the front and got completely soaked and was uncomfortably wet for about 2 hours)

  • Cole, do you always get stuck in the front too?  When we went to Club 33 I swear that my fancy chair soaked up a gallon of water from my pants - oh well!

Lindsay, make sure you figure out how to use the fast passes!
