Would you go?

We found out last night that a friend of ours got engaged a few days ago.  She is from NJ, but her FI is from Israel.   His whole family lives there.  They are possibly thinking of getting married in Israel. We have traveled to Spain and Brazil for weddings.  I would love to go to Israel, but I just feel it isn't safe.  My parents wanted to take me when I was 13 for my Bat Mitzvah, but I was scared then.  I'm not even thinking of any logistics, just the thought of going scares me.  What do you think??

  • i know tons of people who travel there but the thought scares me.  i'm sure it's beautiful but there is so much turmoil that i would feel unsettled the whole trip and would not enjoy it

That was my thought too, I would be unsettled the whole trip.  The whole thing is hypothetical right now.   They could end up getting married in NJ for all we know. LOL.  They have been engaged for like only a few days.  Just wondering if any body else thought the same thing I did.

  • I wouldn't go because I don't have an overwhelming desire to visit there, so the risk far outweighs the reward.  Frank's aunt and cousin went last year and really enjoyed their trip.

But obviously, YOU have to be comfortable with it - you'd be the one going!

  • Can you speak the language and is it in the resort area, then I would consider it.

Yeah I don't know much in Hebrew, I didn't do well in Hebrew school.  LOL!

  • I would not go. About 5 years or so ago a good friend of mine wanted to go to Israel with her husband. He was very hesitant, but she kept insisting it was fine as long as they stayed at a nice resort. They were looking to stay at the Marriott. In the midst of their planning, the Marriott was attacked and people died. Needless to say they did not go then and have never gone.
  • It's probably safer there than anywhere else. MH has been there 3x and wants to go back. I'd go. I know people who go every year. Obviously you can be on a cruise and it can sink. A plane can crash. A car could crash. What are the odds something is going to happen to you? You can live scared or you can live.

I agree. I have always wanted to visit. My entire family has been at different times and it is an absolute MUST on my bucket list. And you do not need to speak Hebrew there.

I agree with this.  I wanted to go on Birthright Israel when I was in college and had the chance to, it was when the program was first started.  My dad refused to let me go saying that it was unsafe because it was during a time of turmoil.  To this day I get mad when I think about it.  I have always wanted to go to Israel and never have.  I would love to be able to go one day.  I'm an anxious traveler regardless of where I am going but I don't let it stop me from going.  I would go!!

  • its a country i would love to visit. but i would have to see how things play out over the next 6 months.

  • Yes, I would go.  There are very few places in this world I wouldn't go.

  • I would go unless money is a limiting factor. I've heard Israel is an amazing and beautiful place to visit and I wouldn't let the off chance of a problem stop me from going.

  • If you can afford to, go. I honestly felt safer there than I feel in some parts of the US. There's military presence everywhere you go. Even when off-duty at clubs, soldiers have Uzis strapped to their backs (at least, that's how it was when I was there right after Rabin's assassination). My brother just spent a full year there and never had any issues on that, or any of his many previous trips, for that matter.

    GO!

  • I went when I was 15, the summer after Desert Storm. I flew by myself, ( 13 hrs, first time on a plane!) and met relatives there, that really I barely knew. It was a free trip but I was 15 and couldn't appreciate it fully. I would LOVE to go back!
  • i love to travel, love it love it. BUT no, Isreal, though somewhere I'd love to go, it's not somewhere I feel safe going right now. Especially with the recent news of a possible standoff between Iran and Isreal and bombs. Tourist areas are often targets for attack. especially American tourists. I would be hesitant to go right now.

Yes, that is what I was worried about.  Ehh I might be getting my panties in bunch about nothing.  Who knows where they will end up getting married.  It was just a hypothetical situation.
