Spinoff Divorce and $ poll

If you are homeowners....

Could you afford the monthly mortgage completely on your own? (No life insurance payout, no divorce settlement, just you and your paycheck.)

Could YH?

Re: Spinoff Divorce and $ poll

  • If you are homeowners....

Could you afford the monthly mortgage completely on your own? (No life insurance payout, no divorce settlement, just you and your paycheck.) No

Could YH? He'd have to give up certain things I think and it would be tight, but he could technically afford it.

  • If you are homeowners....

Could you afford the monthly mortgage completely on your own? (No life insurance payout, no divorce settlement, just you and your paycheck.)  It would depend on how our debt was allocated.  If I was strictly responsible for the mortgage, I could do it.  If I have to consider other debt (student loans, car payment, insurance, etc), then that would be a "no".  I would definitely have to downsize.

    Could YH?  Same as above.

Yes. I technically bought our house based on my income alone before we got married. This goes back to my philosophy of being able to support myself if anything did happen.

Could YH? Yes, see above answer. We both wanted to make sure should anything happen to our jobs; one income would be able to cover it.

  • Me: NO.

DH: yeah.  He pays 100% of our bills now. I only pay for my own student loans and my little credit card bill that I sometimes have.

  • Could you afford the monthly mortgage completely on your own? (No life insurance payout, no divorce settlement, just you and your paycheck.) Definitely not.

    Could YH?  Easily.

We "live" 100% on MH's income. My salary is all fun money or savings.

  • We're not homeowners but I could pay for rent/bills myself. H could not.

  • Yes, cause we have our properties set up to where they make money for us. We cash flow off of every property including our house.
  • Seeing that I'm unemployed now, that would be a no. back when I was working, yes. And dh can afford it too.

I was on my phone earlier and couldn't answer completely...

Could you afford the monthly mortgage completely on your own? (No life insurance payout, no divorce settlement, just you and your paycheck.) right now, no. Obviously since I"m not working. When I was working, I could. It would be super tight and I'd probably downsize. The house is simply too big for me alone and it holds too many memories.

Could YH? He currently is since I'm not working. MH rocks

And, like GLW, when I work, my money is fun money or spending money. We aren't having too much fun now that I'm not working. Sad

This.  In fact, I pretty much do pay for everything.  DH's money goes straight to savings.

  • I also want to add, I do not want to own a house alone because I don't want to be responsible for mowing the lawn or shoveling. I would gladly own a condo or pay for a service to do the above mentioned tasks.

    Word.

There's no way I'd keep our current house if we split or he died, even though I love it.

Could YH? probably, but it would be tight.

While I think we both could afford it on our own, it would mean a lot of sacrfices. I think if anything were to happen to either of us, we would sell the house and split the profits.

  • Him: Easily

    Me: No

HOWEVER, that is only because we have this ridiculously expensive home that is still on the market- once we sell it, we are going to downsize SIGNIFICANTLY (like, cut our mortage in HALF) eventually. I never want to be "house poor" again and I can't wait to buy a little cozy simple house.

I also agree with Jennifer- I'd never own a house alone if I was single.

  • I could afford it if I went back to working full time. If I stayed working part time, I might be able to do it if I really scrimped and cut back on a lot of other things, but it would be really tight.

H could afford it by himself.

  • Yes I could. I did for a year when I divorced xh.

Yes hubby could more than afford it.

    Could YH? Very much so.

  • We live in an apartment and since his mom owns the house, I would have to kick rocks if we were to separate or divorce.

I would not have enough money to live anywhere in Chicago but the hood on some good old fashioned Section 8 housing.(lol)

DH pays 100% of the bills. I used to pay our electricity bill but no more loan money to pay it. I actually just pay my phone bills, credit card bill from my wisdom teeth being pulled, credit card bill from school supplies and groceries along with gas for my car.

  • H: Yes

Me: Maybe. I don't think I could keep up with the rest of the bills.

And like a few others have said, I wouldn't keep the house if I were going to have to live there alone.

  • H could probably do it- I could not.  However, I have way more single friends that could move in with me.  Specifically, I'd move in a couple of male friends that would keep up with all the stuff J used to do.
