I thought babies were supposed to love baths. Am I doing something wrong? Ada seems to just hate it! It's like she is scared - she tenses up and like almost hyperventilates.
We only really give her a bath like twice a week since it's winter and she doesn't really get dirty...but I wish it wasn't so unpleasant for her...I always think I've burned her or something but the water temp is perfect...I put a warm wet cloth on her chest to keep her warm...I don't let the water go into her eyes...thoughts?
Re: baby bathtime
Claire,
Maddy HATED baths for the longest time. It really wasn't until the last 6-7 months that she has enjoyed them(now she asks for bubble as we do baby bubble bath) it used to be that bath time was a 5 minute get her in wash her and rinse her affair and now Maddy sits there until the water is cold and I make her get out so take heart that this shouldn't last forever.
Have either of you tried getting in the big tub with her or showering her? Those are things I have seen other moms say worked for them. I was too afraid that I would drop her to shower with her and we had to fix our bathtub when she was little so I wasn't able to try bathing with her to see if that would help either

Our baths really improved when we started making it warmer. You know those little ducks with the HOT on the bottom? Chris watched that thing religiously and Quinn especially hated them. Hated. Once we got the bath slightly too warm for the duck, it helped a lot. She FREAKS out if it is too hot or too cold, so its pretty easy to tell if we got it right
We also find they're happier if we let them "swim" for a while - we put in a couple of inches and hold them with a hand under their shoulders so the head rests on your wrist and let them kick and play and "float". They lovvvee that. We do baths in the big tub and just pop them in the sling seat thing at the very end to wash them down, the "swim" for a second to do a second rinse.
I don't have the ducky, maybe I should get one...I just do it based on how the water feels on my wrist. My BFF said maybe the HOUSE is too cold so she is just cold an doesn't like it? It could be that...I have brought her in the shower with me. She hated that too but it was faster. I don't know - she didn't scream when she got in the shower like she does when I first put her in the bath, she just kept sucking in air like she was hyperventilating in the shower. She does the same thing when I take her outside on a windy day though and the wind blows on her face.
Maybe my kid is just weird. Honestly, would we be surprised?
Dying!!! Haha. I just LOVE how she needs her "me time" already.
Anyway, S sucks in air during her bath too but just kind of seems confused and not really sure what's going on .... she doesn't cry but she doesn't look thrilled. I'm still waiting for her to want to play with the water. We only bath 2x week right now too...
I have the duck if you want to try it. I used it once the other day and that's about it.
I'm going to Target today...if they don't have ducks or if they're too spendy I'll take yours. But I think they're like a few bucks, I might as well just get one. She can use it as a bath toy later right? Assuming she eventually grows to love bath time like most kids!
Quinn is the same way, unless you are singing, dancing, or feeding her. When she's tired she'll generally SCREAM (like glass shattering shreaking) until you put her down to sleep. Avery on the other hand will happily sleep on you until the end of time.
The girls are already starting to bat at the rubber ducky. I'm glad, because we were given about 2 dozen various ducks as part of a gift.
Connor loved his first bath and then got iffy about them for a while now he's back to loving them. I make the water just slightly warmer than what the duck says and then I keep the duck in the water: He picks it up and talks to it or tries to eat it - my kid already has a freakishly weird obsession with anything that's a duck (there is one on his car seat handle who I swear is his best friend).
So letting him play for a few minutes before actually cleaning him was the trick for us. He loves to kick in the water and splash around and pin his duck with his feet.
He still is a little iffy about getting his head washed so for that, after we're all done with everything else, I take him out, dry him off, put a clean diaper on, and wrap him in the towel and then just hold him over the tub and wash his hair / head / face.
My MIL swears by bathing them in the sink instead of the bath tub. Maybe they feel more comfortable in a tighter space? Also, the warmer water helped us tremendously.
P is obsessed with his millions of ducks. We got him that really big duck, he loves it. Here's an example of a conversation I had with him recently during his bath:
me: "What's the duck say?"
P: "QUACK QUACK"
me: "what's the big duck say?"
P: "I'M A BIG DUCK!"
