Soo currently im on Depo Provera (the shot) and my doctor suggested getting off of it after 2 years because it causes calcium loss. Well... It's been 2 years and I now have to change. I was looking at changing to either the patch or mirena. I was just looking for anyone who has been on either and their honest opinion on them. Another factor in my choice is the chance of infertility. The Depo can cause infertility for up to 3 years!!! Me and my FI are looking at getting married in 2 years so I was looking at something that won't prolong that... Any advise would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance ladies
Re: Mirena vs. The Patch
I was on the patch and hated it. It is a decent sized square that looks like a band-aid. I would get sores from it, not to mention clothing sticking to it, and sometime fit or sand. Plus, when I would take it off, I would have to really scrub to get all the adhesive off.
Ditto.
I loved loved loved the Patch. Didn't have a single problem with it.
Unfortunately, I developed an allergy to the adhesive that keeps it on your skin and had to stop using it. I was completely bummed.
Something to consider is the hormones...
With the Mirena (what I have and LOVE) the hormones are localized to the uterus and don't effect the rest of your hormonal system like the shot, patch, or pills. Also, many women experience a period loss..which is fantastic!!! I spotted the first month then no periods after that, and it's been great. It lasts for 5 years and you dont have to keep changing it out or thinking about it. I would recommend the Mirena to anyone!!! Also..i had a problem with low sex drive on other forms of birth control, but that drive came back with mirena.
I was on the patch for years before I had children and I loved it! I am horrible at remembering to take pills so this worked for me. However, due to the very high risk of blood clots and other side effects my dr. refused to put me back on it after our second son was born. Thankfully my husband got a vasectomy so I didn't need to take anything.
Now that I am having major cycle issues I am having the mirena inserted later this month. Regular hormonal birth control is no longer an option due to my already very high risk for breast cancer. According to my dr. most women with mirena completely stop having periods or have very very light ones. I am hoping it will resolve my issues for the next five years until I can have a different procedure done that will take me to menopause.
I have Mirena and think it is great. No periods after the first 3 months. Nothing to think about each day. I used the patch and didn't like the irritation from the adhesive and it always looked dirty after a day or two from lint sticking to it. The patch has much higher levels of hormones with a much higher risk of blood clots.
I am sorry for the person who had the ectopic, but it is a risk at any time and clearly a higher risk if you have had any STD's or with an IUD.
