Re: Oscar movies polle
I've seen The Help and Midnight in Paris.
I did think the actress (Viola Davis?) in The Help was really good. Midnight in Paris was an entertaining movie, but not Oscar worthy. I think it only made the list because it's Woody Allen.
Currently Reading: Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
For me:
Hugo - very sweet movie and visually beautiful. I think it will win many Oscars, but not best picture
War Horse - don't want to see. looks too sappy
The Artist - going to see this tonight!
The Descendents - SUCH a good movie, but it was missing a certain something to make it excellent
Midnight in Paris - loved it, but not best picture-worthy
Moneyball - good, not great
The Help - haven't seen
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - looks too sad, won't see it in the theater
The Tree of Life - haven't seen, not sure what it's about
I've seen 3. Descendents, Midnight in Paris, and Moneyball. Out of those 3, I liked Midnight in Paris the least. I would think that The Descendents would do the best.
I have heard really great things about Hugo, especially considering the fact that I thought it was a kids' movie, so I expect that one to do well, as well as The Artist.
I've only seen the Descendents as well. I also thought it was missing something to make it really great. I can't put my finger on it though.
doglove - yeah, there was just something...something. Maybe the screenwriting was a tad sloppy; there was some sparkle missing in it. I loved the movie overall, though.
I'm upset that Trent Reznor didn't get nominated for best score with Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I adored that movie, and the opening music with the black tar stuff reminded me of James Bond. So cool! I wish this picture well; it was better than the Swedish version, in my opinion.
really? I haven't seen either, but I've heard the opposite. What did you like better about it?
I haven't seen any of them. I rarely see movies though and struggle to stay awake when I do ... kind of a movie freak of nature.
However, a guy whose cousin and sister I know was an assistant producer or director on Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close so I'd like to see that one!
I haven't seen any of them and even if I did I wouldn't care.
I am, afterall, an acoholic grandma.
The cinematography was really cool with this version, and although both movies stuck to the main plot really well, the American version wasn't quite as graphic with the rape scenes (which I appreciated). It still drove the point home, though. And I love Rooney Mara as Lisbeth. She kicked azz.
Also, I'm a big sucker for a good music background, and Reznor did such a good job matching the score to the overall tone of the movie. I don't even remember the music in the Swedish version.
*dons geek hat*
I totally agree with you here. That was the first opening-credits montage I've ever been captivated by.
Did Rooney get nominated for an award? She really kicked major ass as Lisbeth.
Oh yay! Even if she doesn't win, I'm happy she got some recognition.
The only movie from the list I've seen is The Help. That one is a head-scratcher for me. It was a decent movie and an OK book, but it seemed to miss something. I always found myself wanting to know more - about the characters' backstories, about daily life in Jackson. Instead of focusing on one central story, she crammed a lot in there. The author didn't really delve into any of the story arcs. It frustrated me.
