I legit like the name Demelza

This means I should never procreate, doesn't it?

Are there any special names that you like but, in reality, could never use?

  • When I was a kid I wanted to have a boy named Leighton Hails, and I wanted to pronounce Leighton like lee instead of lay...i don?t think I can judge. We all have our guilty pleasuresWink

  • Homer.  I think it is a beautiful strong name and refuse

To let a stupid cartoon character ruin it.

One of my great uncles was named Homero.

Same! How funny. I actually wanted to use the word Timanfaya (a volcano in the canary islands) as a girl name until a friend misheard and though I said"tim on fire". I still se retly think it would be a really cool, unique name.

  • I looooooove the name Xiomara. I *might* be able to get away with a name like this in NYC, but if the girl decides to live anywhere else in the US besides maybe Miami, or anywhere in the world that is not a Spanish-speaking country, she would be totally screwed.

Also, I shudder to think of how my ILs would pronounce this name if we actually used it.

  • I love the name Clementine, but DH would never whole-heartedly go with it, and the Brits would struggle with someone being named after a citrus fruit.

  • I once read a book where the main male character was called Sterling and I have loved that name ever since. I don't think it is something I could really name a son though.

  • It's really not that strange, but I've always liked Moses. It's a family name, but I fear it'll be vetoed if we have a boy because DH really wants to continue with the father-son family thing and use his name. (I have a hard time with this, knowing that there are some people in the region where we live that discriminate against him because he has a Basque name. Yes, there are people really are that blatantly "silly" here. I'm not sure I want a future son to deal with that.)
  • I've always loved the name Ursula, but everyone associates it with The Little Mermaid (and/or just think it is ugly, and I can see why, but I just really like it). DH said there was no way, so I named my fat blue car Ursula :)

False.  I think of Phoebe Buffet's slutty sister.

  • I have always loved Phillipa. but wouldn't use it right now because of the popularity of Kate's sister.  I would hate for people to think I named a child after someone famous.

I like Courtland as well, but DH says it sounds snooty.

I tried to get a friend to name her third child Michigan, but was unsuccessful.  She named her first Mason, and I tried to get her to go with Dixon as a middle name -- it would have rhymed with her last name so he would have been Mason Dixon ___xon.  She declined all my great ideas!

  • I loved Effie for a girl.  It was XH's deceased father's name and a definite boy name in Hebrew but I loved it. Not so much anymore.

    Love the name Clementine.

I like it too.  My coworkers daughter is Clementine, so it's not unheard of for the Brits!

  • I love the name Patrice for a boy.  For a while I told myself that the kid will be growing up in a francophone area so it would be fine.  That being said, I think the vast majority of Americans would assume that a Patrice was a girl.

Ursula was my grandmother's name.  She went by Ula (Ew-luh).  I'd love to use the name but I just can't.

By "Mexican," do you mean "Nahuatl" or another indigenous language? No, it's definitely "Castellano" based, although it's kind of rare. It's derived from the male Guiomar (14 century or so) and isn't used very often, although it tends to be more common in certain Latin American countries, like Cuba, where my family is originally from. There is a dancer with the Cuban National Ballet now named Xiomara. That's the only semi-famous person I can think of with that name. But I've met women from other LA countries with the name Xiomara.

You could go for Laurence - only problem is that english speakers might think it's a boy... my dad nearly had a heart attack when I told him I was staying over at my good friend's Laurence when I was 15...

Ditto this. We rented a short-term apartment from a woman named Laurence when we were here househunting in the fall. DH took care of everything and I didn't know the person's name whom we spent 1 hour waiting for at a local cafe. I thought it was a little odd there was 1 woman waiting at the cafe as long as we were, but DH kept saying we were waiting for a man. Nope, it was Laurence, sitting 4 tables away from us the whole time.

I like the name Xiomara, but only pronounced properly in Spanish. I think an American accent would ruin it.

Its also a ickname for Evelyn. My Evie is named after my great aunt Evelyn who went by Effie her whole life. The only reason we didn't use Effie as a nn is bc DH said it sounded Ike him like saying F You and he didn't want to think that every time he said her name. I still love it.

My favorite girl name is Virginia, dh vetoes bc he thinks the nn will be vagina. I think kids will make fun of any name if they want to and refuse to give it up. T was my grandmothers name. We also both love the name fergus. Not terribly popular, probably.

I know two Xiomaras in NYC! It's a beautiful name, though I'm still not sure I pronounce it correctly. Ever. (They humor me).

I love the names Rhiannon and Tziporrah. We might actually use Tziporrah if/when we have kids, but probably not Rhiannon...

Virginia does remind me of vagina.  Another nn is Ginny

So, I looked it up, thinking that with the "X" it might be Basque. (I've got a lot of "Xabier"s) It's got Arabic roots and means the most beautiful star in the sky. I like that meaning :)
