Should I buy a dyson stick vacuum?

Our house is small, 1000 sq. feet. We have all pergo flooring, which shows all of the dog hair and dirt our dogs lovingly bring us. We currently upkeep our floors by sweeping, and then using our dust buster (but the dust buster won't suck up the dog hair, so we have to carry the pile of hair into the trash can, then vacuum the dirt).

I've been contemplating getting a stick vacuum for a while because I think it would be quicker and easier than sweeping. Battery operation isn't a big deal because, again, my house isn't that big. I would also like to be able to suck all the dog hair out of our couch and recliner so people can sit on our furniture without getting covered in hair.

Dyson makes the DC35, which is a battery powered handheld vacuum with a stick attachment to do floors. It looks glorious, has great reviews, but is $329. I am willing to purchase it with my own savings because DH is strapped for cash with his school, but he still thinks it's too expensive and a waste of money when a broom costs $30 and does the job "just fine".

What would you do?

  • I believe every house should have a Dyson. Especially those with pets. :)

We have the DC25 Animal and it has been the best vaccuum ever, going on 4 years now.  Corgis shed a lot, and the versatility between carpet and hardwood is seamless.

    Go for it, I say!

  • Are you planning on moving to a larger house in the near (3 yearsish) future?  If so, I'd just spend the extra little bit and get a regular size Dyson.

We have the animal and I love it.  It was definitely worth the money.  I'm just thinking that while the stick vacuum is ideal for you now, if you do move it would be better to have a vacuum that could work in a new home too.

  • I bought a Dyson this weekend (the new Animal 41).  It is about half the size of my Bissell I'd been using and I got 4 cannisters of crap out of the gnarly carpeting in our condo, which is just slightly bigger than your house (1200 sq ft).

I agree with Stees that it may be worth it to spend $100ish extra if you have the cash and buy the full size.  I love that the vacuum came with an upholstery attachment specifically designed to get hair off of furniture.  It also works really well on my stairs.  I'm seriously obsessed- I've had it since Saturday and I've vacuumed 3 times.

  • We're probably not going to move in the next few years, unless the housing market recovers faster than we think it will. Maybe I'll go look at the smaller full-size versions and see how big they are. I just don't want to lug a giant vacuum around the house since all it really needs to do is pick up surface dirt and hair, rather than draw anything nasty out of carpet.

Yeah, look at the 41- it is so much smaller than the 25, and I can easily lift it with one hand.

Also, I used a BBB coupon on it, so be sure to check for one of those before you buy any Dyson.
