Oh my MIL!

MIL is visiting until April, lucky for me she is staying a five minute walk away at my SIL place.

A few days before she arrived, SIL and I were talking about her visit and I told her about the time MIL stayed with us in Vietnam for a month and rearranged my whole house while I was at work. When I came home she explained to me how her way was better. I didn't want to hurt her feeling so I just left it as is until she left, I knew she was just "trying" to help.

So today I help MIL bring some groceries up to SIL apartment and when we get up there MIL shows me all the rearranging she had done that morning!  The whole time she is saying how her daughter is going to kill her, but oh well, it's better this way etc... All the while I'm thinking, yep, you're in trouble! HAHA!

She will be staying with us next week for a few days - I hope she won't try it again at my place.

Any IL gripes to share?

Re: Oh my MIL!

  • That is definitely annoying.

My MIL seems to like to stir things up between me and DH. Or maybe she really doesn't know how to communicate. They're coming to visit and without consulting me, she sent me the itinerary she booked at a hotel down the street. Then she tells DH "it seemed like it would really inconvenience Anna if we stayed with you" when I SAID NO SUCH THING or even so much as responded to her email with anything but "great, we can't wait to see you!"

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Now DH thinks I should call her and talk her into staying with us, but that seems like such a ridiculous game to play. That is definitely not how my family works.

Ouch! What did your H say to her?

  • I have some IL gripes, but I have to wait until tomorrow to share.

ETA: Because my H is here, and I have to think of good ones.

  • The biggest IL gripe I have is that my FIL never rings before coming over and he has incredibly bad timing, but he's so darn sweet and good to us I can't really complain. I'd rather have him show up without ringing than not show up at all. And I think the reason he doesn't ring is because he is hard of hearing - he wears a hearing aid, but talking on the phone is difficult for him.

Not much of a complaint after all is it? lol

  • I have no MIL gripes, she's a very sweet woman.

FIL on the other hand...ugh. I don't even want to start.

hehehe, I'm the same way. Sorry folks, I have no desire to play games. I'll let DH deal with you if you're going to be like this.

  • I've asked my MIL if the month of August will work for her to come over to help with the arrival of the baby. I've asked her twice. She has not answered me which is fine because maybe she's checking her calendar or something. But just yesterday she told DH through email that anytime we need her she'll fly over. Ummmmm?! I'm pretty sure we've already addressed this, haven't we? I love her and she's sweet but sometimes I think she tries to juggle too much therefore she gets very confused. She also thinks when my SIL and her family move to FL from SC the distance will be the exact same from IN to SC vs IN to FL. Anyone who graduated 6th grade would know that it's going to take longer to get to FL now. She said that last time we talked on Skype and I didn't bother to correct her.

  • My MIL used to say horrible, hurtful things to me and it caused huge problems. Then she focused her attention on DIL #2 (she has 4 sons and currently 3 DILs), so I got a  break, and ever since I got pregnant she's been all puppies and rainbows with me. DIL #2 had a miscarriage last year and wasn't ready to start trying again right away (although she's now pregnant again), and she accepted a job in Munich while her DH is working in Amsterdam, so they saw each other every weekend but not during the week. MIL's gem of a comment to her this last fall: "Well, maybe the miscarriage was a good thing. The way you two are living right now wouldn't be a good situation for a child anyway." Tongue Tied Yeah, or maybe if she hadn't had the m/c she wouldn't have accepted the position in Munich. Sigh.

And when they were announcing this pregnancy (they waited until 14 weeks because she was having bleeding and cramping), they told our DH's grandma (so MIL's MIL) first because they were helping her move. In between then and when they called MIL later that evening to tell her the news, the grandma and MIL had spoken and grandma had let the news slip, so MIL knew that grandma was told first. Big oops. She's the kind of woman who will take that as a slight and hold a grudge.

  • MIL is a lovely woman but she NEVER shuts up. It's almost impossible to get a word in, try and she'll just speak (louder and louder) right over you.

All the ILs are the same - I guess that's what you get from growing up with 6 siblings...

Ask me again in 7 weeks - if I survived 2 weeks with MIL, 2 sets of uncles/aunties & 4 cousins...
