Is vacation time negotiable?
Hi all!
I have been offered a position, but the vacation is terrible - nothing the first year, then 10 days. Is that negotiable at all? I'm used to three weeks and it being available immediately.

Everything is negotiable. I got an extra week when I got my job because I had 3 weeks at my last job.
I've never worked at a place were it was available immediately though. I am surprised they don't work on an accrual basis. That seems very common.
Where I work now, we can roll over so much time, it doesn't matter. But at my old company, we couldn't roll it over and if we couldn't use our time before we accrued it, then EVERYONE would have to take the last couple days of the year off!
And back to the OP- I can't believe NO vacation time the first year at all. HOnestly, even if you could negotiate more time, companies that are THIS stingy w/ vacation time strike me as a company that aren't going to be very "work/life balance" friendly.

I've been at a company for the last three years where we only got 5 vacation days a year. It is one of the many reasons I started to look for a new job. There is no balance and everyone gets burned out. I would try to negotiate it because not having any vacation time at all is a dealbreaker to me.
I've worked at places where you can go negative but it is frowned upon. I've also worked at placed where you couldn't borrow at all and had to take unpaid leave if you didn't have any in your bank. I only mention this because "borrowing" or up front leave is not always the standard.
While earning vacation is a pain it has never been a big deal for me. We don't ever take more than 5 days off at a time and I can earn that with in 6 months.

It depends. I knew on my last interview that negotiating vacation time would not have done any good. Part of this was their mention of the economy and whatnot and another part was the fact that they offered me more money than they had wanted to, but told me I was worth it.
But, you can try.
It is definitely negotiable, but obviously not always granted!
Some companies are more willing to grant more vacation days than an increase in salary, especially if you're coming in near the top of their "pay grade" for your position. You can always ask, worst is they'll say "no". Just take it into consideration when you decide whether or not to accept the position.
Alternatively, will they let you take time off without pay or "buy" additional vacation days?
Good luck! I would struggle with less than 3 weeks vacation. Heck, I struggle with 3 weeks vacation!
