So my 10 year high school reunion is due this year. Our class was lazy and rolled right over the 5 year without doing anything so this will be the first reunion our class has organized. Guess who is on the organization committee? That's right, this gal.
I've never been to a reunion of any kind and am looking for ideas on what to do, where to go, how to fund it. Do people usually have to buy tickets to these things? I'm really clueless, so if anyone who has been to any kind of class reunion wants to share their story or experience, I would appreciate it.
We've thrown around the idea of a golf outing, BBQ at the park with spouses/families, dinner and a night out at a bar/club. That's as far as it's gotten with the planning and brainstorming. Thanks!
Re: Let's talk Reunions...
At my class reunion they had a bar night on friday night where we could all meet, hang out, and talk. On saturday night they had a dinner at a banquet all and we had to buy tickets to it (dinner was low key sandwiches, they did have a keg they bought just at a local restaurant), and then Sunday they had family day where you brought your own lunch and kids to one of the local parks.
Honestly: the whole weekend was too much. In upcoming years - I will probably only go to the night at the bar or to the family picnic day. There were discussions at the reunion on what to do next year. And two main ideas were brought up. Have it the weekend of the annual town festival, and do the friday night at the beer tent. Or do it homecoming weekend, do friday night at the game, and then dinner saturday.
Good luck planning - I know it's such a hassle.
We're in the middle of planning right now for our 10 year. We're having a dinner/bar on Saturday night and then a "breakfast" social-type thing on Sunday in the park for families. We've only met once to do the initial planning, so we haven't gotten into details like RSVP, tickets, etc yet, just the booking of venues and beginning to collect addresses. Which reminds me that I need to work on collecting addresses.
We also skipped over the 5-year because we were just too busy to make it happen. From the feedback we've been hearing, people are much more excited about the 10-year than they were about the possible 5-year.
My 10 year is also this year! I'm not on the committee so I have no idea what they are planning.
I chose not to go to my 5 year. They grilled hot dogs at the golf course and charged everyone $20. Then everyone went to the bar afterward. Pretty lame.
I went to my ex's 5 year and it was a potluck and grilling out at a park, I don't think we paid since people brought their own food. And then to the bar afterward, lol. Also lame.
I'm hoping our 10 year is a little better, but I'm not sure if I will end up going or not.
My mom's school is big on reunions. They always have a big fancy dinner. They plan it at the same weekend as the local fair so they can have a float in the parade. They also have everyone submit a blurb about themselves and make a book every year with what everyone has been up to, I think that is pretty neat.

You guys are making me feel old. My 20 is this year!
My class fought so much about what to do at the 10 that all the planning fell apart until finally some local classmates threw together a picnic at a shelter at Saylorville. They got subs, sides & pop and honestly, it wasn't terrible. We got to catch up in a quiet atmosphere and the kids had a place to run around. I'd do it that way again, with better planning of course.
At least this time around, there's facebook, so we have a reunion group and a couple of girls have taken the lead. So far, nothing planned though. I'm going to laugh if it's the same weekend as DH's 20, which we'll go to over mine in a heartbeat. His school has a huge alumni weekend every summer, with a Friday night dinner, Saturday festival with volleyball tournaments between the 5/10/15, etc year reunion classes. Lots of fun.
I skipped my 5 year this year as it was my due date week. They had a dinner at the golf course (no golfing though). I think it was $20 or $25 for sandwiches and cash bar. Way too expensive for what it was. No tickets were required, but everyone was supposed to RSVP and pay before, but I know some RSVPed and just paid at the door; others just showed up without an RSVP too.
Of course, most of them went to the bar afterwards too.
My class was full of drama in school and continued to be so after graduation also as there were stupid petty fights all night I guess.
My 10 year is this summer. I am not going. Reading everything on FB, its just going to be one big impress fest. Kids aren't welcome. Cocktail party dress. $70 a head. Most of the people I went to hs with are still single and partying it up. No thanks.
Our 10 year is this spring as well. I'm helping plan. It's supposed to be our class president but he went MIA a couple years ago (hippy wall street protester, haha, no one's heard from him forever)
I graduated with 24 people so we're renting the community center and having an early get together for people to bring kids then just hanging out afterwards with just adults.
Saturday night our HS does a big catered banquet with all the reunion classes (10, 20, 30 years, etc) I think it's like $15/person.
Nothing crazy, sorry I'm not more helpful. Fun to see all the class of '02 on here though!
