The "million mom" and Ellen scandal makes me sad

Heck, even Bill O'Reilly is defending Ellen.
I have a really hard time explaining these things to students and coworkers abroad.

Re: The "million mom" and Ellen scandal makes me sad

  • It's ignorance at it's finest. I hate to hear things like this. I love Ellen and I loved her response to these Million Mom idiots.

This is the nicest possible way of saying what I'm thinking.

The widespread ignorance and bigotry in the US makes me absolutely furious.  Furious!

  • Wow. Never thought I'd agree with Bill O'Reilly about anything. Ever. Good for him for not just paying lipservice to a conservative organisation.

I have a hard time explaining US social issues to people, when everything went wrong with the Susan Komen foundation recently, people here were just very confused about the issue 'what, you mean poor women don't get mamograms? But... why?' I was so up in arms about something that would never even be a problem in my current country.

  • I love Ellen and I loved how she responded to all this BS on her show.

  • I do think it's crappy and bigoted. Don't get me wrong on that. But I'm getting this feeling that you guys think the US is the most homophobic country in the world or something. It most certainly is not. I'm not saying it's GOOD, but the homophobia I've seen in the UAE and Ethiopia makes the US look like a gay person's paradise. Just a little perspective.
  • MrsBini, that's not at all what I'm saying.
The reason it bothers so me so much is that it's my home country.

  • Ellen is a class act. So beyond my understanding that they are more concerned about the fact that her spouse is a woman than the fact that Ellen is a great person who has a strong, happy relationship.

I would be interested to see how some of those million moms would react if we started defining their "lifestyle" based on their sex life.

Example: I'm sorry, but I don't agree with your "fantasizing-about-the-next-door-neighbor-when-he-cuts-the-grass-shirtless and wears-a-cheerleader-outfit-but-only-on-your-anniversary" lifestyle!

Yes, but Ethiopia doesn't claim to be "the greatest country in the world" with "freedom for all", blah blah blah and then turn around and still have these highly publicised mindsets.

America highlights itself as the land of opportunity for all, unless you're gay, not white, not god fearing (of the christian god variety), poor, in poor health, etc. and I think it surprises people outside of America because a lot of the key people of note that have campaigned, publicised and brought the issues surrounding these groups have been American themselves (Rosa Parks, etc.) but that even though these ideals (recognition of gay marriage, etc.) have been now established in other countries they haven't yet been embraced or established in America - although America is recognised as a world leader for western culture.

I don't think at all that people feel that America is "the most homophobic country in the world". I just think that people expect America and its' citizens to be more forward thinking and are surprised that these mindsets still exist there.

I tend to think that Canada is very liberal and that we're cool with everything. Not all of us are, and a large group of Canadians are also very much against gay rights / marriage / overall gay-ness / gay - cooties, and they also voice their opinions about it. And the Brits have the BNP for god's sake. They just don't get the same kind of press that Americans do. (thank freaking god.)

Chronically hilarious - you'll split your stitches!
I wrote a book! Bucket list CHECK!
  • This "million moms" group has 40,000 members.  A lot that didn't agree with the stance the group was making against Ellen and JCPenney.  It's extremely ignorant to think a group like this represents all of the US.
  • wow - i hadn't heard of that

how sad and small minded :(

I LOVE Ellen - she is SO entertaining !

Agreed. I would hate to think what other countries would look like if judged by their smallest minded, most bigoted citizens.
