Machine applique on premade tshirt question

Ok venturing out from my safe  haven of paper crafting....

I have a tshirt that I would like to applique for my nieces birthday.  I know i need to prewash and I have heat and bond lite so i can cut it out on my cricut.

It is a stretchy tshirt material.  What type of stabilizer do I need underneath? I do not have an embroidery machine so it will not be in a hoop.  Am I nuts? Should I just stick with the freezer paper?

Re: Machine applique on premade tshirt question

  • How stretchy are we talking? (ETA: I avoid super stretchy shirts, so my advice may not work lol.)

I don't use any stabilizer. Just make sure that the shirt is not stretched out when you're sewing it. If it starts to get stretched, stop with the needle down and readjust the shirt so that it's not too stretched and continue sewing.

  • Knit interfacing, its soft and also has a slight stretch to it. :) It'll help the knit hold its shape. Go really slowly and making sure your tension is correct.

  • I would use a soft cutaway on the inside, and give it a quick shot of spray adhesive first, so that the fabric remains stable while doing the applique.  It can easily be cut and removed after if desired.

I did end up using a soft cutaway and that did work well.  The viking lady suggested basting it but I think the spray adhesive would be better in the future. Thanks for the tips.
