Going to Miami Today

I posted last week about how my mom and grandma are stuck in Miami due to my grandma's health problems and surgery needs. I'm going down there this afternoon to visit them. I haven't been to Miami since I was 12 years old and it figures that the the first time I go back is to spend time at a nursing home- lol. Grandma is resting at this facillity until they can do her next surgery and my mom is staying in a guest room there. They've been in Miami for over 3 weeks now. They are both doing as best they can but my mom is up and down. Sometimes when I talk to her she sounds together and like she's being strong and positive. Other times she is nothing but negative and she sounds hopeless. They are basically being held hostage down there until the doctors decide that it's time for Grandma's surgery and I guess they have no idea when that will be! Apparently it will be at least within the next couple weeks, but then again, nothing is certain. They can't just go back home to Jacksonville for the time being because Grandma needs care until the surgery is done.

I keep imagining how it would be if I were in my mom's shoes. What if you had to go to another city to help a loved one through a medical problem, but then you were stuck there with no definite date of departure? I guess this must happen to lots of people but I've never known anyone to whom it did. I feel so badly for both of them. My Grandma is sad and depressed because she feels like she's being a burden to her daugher.

Anyway... just had to get that out! I will be there tonight through Sunday morning. I will do my best to bring a little bit of happiness to both of them. I just hope they can both go back home to Jacksonville asap!!

Nicole, if you see this, didn't you say that your mom was in a similar situation with her mother?

Re: Going to Miami Today

  • Hey Lauren, i wrote you back last night.  Have a safe drive!
  • Lauren, it's great you can go spend time with your Grandma and your mom.  They both need a pick me up that is for sure.  Take this time with your Grandma to catch up on all those stories you might not remember about her life.

I took care of my Grandpa for a week after he got knee replacement surgery.  It was pretty intense, but I thought, "when is it ever going to be just pop-pop and I?"  He told me all those great stories about when he was a kid, meeting my Mom-Mom, having kids, etc.  It was very special.

Wishing your Grandma a speedy recovery.

  • Sending lots of good thoughts to your grandma - and your mom too.  Hopefully surgery is sooner rather than later and she'll be on her way home to Jacksonville in the near future.

I hope your weekend is relaxing, and you're able to bring some new energy into what I'm sure is mentally and emotionally draining period of time for both you mom and grandma.

    Safe travels!

  • Lauren, I don't think I ever responded to your first post but I just wanted to say I'm sorry your family is going through this. I hope your mom is able to keep her spirits up, because she's doing such a nice thing. My grandmother had to go to Cleveland for heart surgery last winter (she was there for about 2-3 months, I think, by the time she was strong enough to return to FL), but luckily she has children in Cleveland that she could stay with so there was no hotel or anything like that involved. Even still it was very taxing both on my aunt who hosted her and on my grandma because she felt like she was a burden. It's a tough situation for everybody.

Anyway, I'm glad you're able to go visit. I'm sure that will cheer them both up considerably. Have a safe trip!
