Would you have said something?

neon ski jacket

This weekend should be interesting.  BF and I are taking his teenagers on a two night ski trip.

Anyways, I gather they have not skied much as his jacket he was planning to wear looks straight out of 1989.  Like over 20 years old.  At first I wasn't going to mention anything but last night I finally just told him that I didn't think he should wear that jacket because it is out of style.  And he did confirm that in fact the jacket is twenty years old.  Was it rude for me to mention it?

This jacket is similar except his is white with neon blue and hot pink I believe.  Granted it is a Descente but really?  Hot Pink?

Re: Would you have said something?

  • Depends if he's a guy who would get all sensitive over something like that. My boyfriend, I would have no problem saying that Better Off Dead's wardrobe dept called and wants their ski jacket back. He would just find it funny.

Regardless of style, was the jacket still wearable?  Would it still be keeping him warm?  If yes to those questions, then I think you should have minded your p's and q's.

Now I feel really bad.  It is a Descente which I gather is a good brand.  And yes it seems to be in good condition.

  • If money is tight I would keep mum.  If he could easily afford a new jacket, you bet I would be saying something--that is one fugly jacket!

ETA: His poor teenagers are probably happy you said something.  That's pretty mortifying to be hanging out with your dad if he's wearing that!

  • Well I guess it depends on his financial situation, like maybe he cannot afford to buy a new one?  Also, guys can be very clueless when it comes to fashion so maybe he just thought it was fine and wasn't worried about it?  Still, that jacket is all sorts of ugly.  If you're comfortable enough, I'd suggest going shopping for new jackets together and maybe he'll get the subtle hint.

GREAT point, I bet his kids are horrified of the thing!

Well I don't expect he will go out and spend a bunch of money on a new jacket.  But the good news is the weather is going to be in the 50's so it isn't going to be very cold and he has another shell type thing he can wear with layers underneath.

Yeah, I would imagine his kids would be embarassed.  I didn't even think of that.  I just don't know because aren't the 80's back?

  • I told BF that the 20+ year old suit that he wore to a gala that we went to was fug, so there's my thoughts on the matter!  His reasoning was that he wears a suit 1x/yr, max, so he doesn't want to drop $200 on a new one that will just sit in his closet, gathering dust.
  • Guys that wear hot pink are for making fun of, not for dating

  • I probably wouldn't have been able to keep my mouth shut - neon is just bad bad bad.  At least it's not one of those onesie snow suits - I was rocking one of those in the 90s Cool

LMAO! that is hilarious! If he could afford a new one, I would tell him it needs to go but I'm known for being extremely blunt. There should be some pretty good sales going on for winter gear right now.

D has a pretty bad fashion sense and thankfully has zero problems with my dressing him. I thoroughly enjoy it.

  • I think in this instance you are morally obligated to not allow him out of the house in that. I probably wouldn't have said anything because I'd be too busy laughing.
