Tell me to be patient...I want a new car! (long whine) :)

I SO BADLY want a new car right now.  I think it's mostly because my car is super dirty inside and out and it just doesn't feel comfortable to be right now.  Plus, it's getting older and I'm not usually one to keep a car for a long time - not that I've had this one for a long time.

Right now I have a 2005 Dodge Magnum with all kinds of cool stuff that I've never had before:  leather, lots of power stuff, moon roof, etc.  It has nearly 100k miles on it.  It's been paid off for about a year, I think, maybe a year and a half.  If I clean it up really good, I could maybe get 7k (max) max for trade.  We have no additional funds for a downpayment.

We have a mortgage we are underwater on, a HELOC we got since we didn't put enough down (2007, height of the market - yes, we were dummies. :)).  We have a truck payment that has about $6500 left on it.  Our payment is just under $250/month and we usually make 2 payments of $250/month.  According to our loan, we have about three years left on that, but in reality with our extra payments, we could have it paid off in less than 18 months.  That is our only debt.

BUT, we are a 1 income household and James's job is anything but stable.  I mean, he's not going to LOSE his job, but it's construction, so it can get really slow sometimes.  And he wants to start taking some classes to maybe get out of this industry in the future, and that is a much more "valuable" expense.

The car I really want, the best deal I have seen is about 25k.  I have figured that our payments would be around 335.  Ugh.  I know that's too much, especially with our current car payment.

I have had my car since 2007, so I'm getting antsy.

I feel better writing out how ridiculous of an idea it is.  Thanks for reading.  I know I'm fortunate to have a nice car that runs well and is safe.  I really do love my car, too, and if they didn't discontinue the Magnum in 2008, that's what I'd be looking at for my next vehicle.  I guess I should just spend some time really cleaning it up or maybe even pay for a super thorough detail.  That would probably help a lot.

  • If it makes you feel any better, H (he's the only driver our household) has a 1997 Camry that he got from his parents when they bought a new car in 2004.  It is also all dirt-ball inside.  We probably won't buy another car until we own a home.

  • Just try to remember how nice it is to not have a car payment! Both our cars our older than that and have a lot of miles. I wouldn't buy something until I really had to or I had money saved.

    How about this:

Put away what you would pay in a car payment into a fund. Hold on awhile longer and then maybe you can get something nicer?

  • If I were you, I'd go get your truck detailed by professionals. They can make cars look/smell like new, and maybe that'll make you feel better about driving it? Also, 18 months is not that long to wait to get your truck paid off, and when that happens, you'll have about $500 a month freed up to put towards a new car. Patience, my dear. Patience. :)

This... but I am not going to help here...

Sounds like your car is a gas sucker? Is the new car you want better on gas? If you can get a decent amount on a trade and would save money on gas if you traded the truck in, it might be worth it just to do it now. Although, each year the cars are getting more and more fuel efficient, so if you wait a year or two you might be able to get an even more fuel efficient car.

  • We will keep the truck, we would trade in the Dodge Magnum.  It is a gas sucker (both are really), but that's not really a concern for me as I don't commute.  I drive to take Tman to and from school, errands, and our weekend activities.  Honestly, gas mileage isn't really a factor for us.  Too bad, because that would be a sweet excuse to go for it.

  • Get your car cleaned so it feels like new, pay of DH's truck and/or set aside what you would be paying for 2nd car, then you can get something you're happy w/ when his is paid off.
