first visit w/ RE today - nervous

We have our appointment this afternoon and I'm not sure what to expect. I was warned they would do an ultrasound, I'm guessing I should probably expect an internal as well? I have no idea how I feel about this - relieved that I might finally have answers? Pressured to consider IVF? Apprehensive about what they'll tell me or getting a definitive no, you have no chance of conceiving on your own? I'm just nervous all around.

  • not sure who you are goign to see but I can tell you I was NOT pressured to consider IVF at all!  my dr was amazing and explained all my options and what steps we need to take first.  She let us take our time to make our decision and answered all of my questions.  The did do an internal ultrasound.  Good luck to you!!!
  • I don't have any advice to share, but I'm wishing you all the best!

  • Half the time it ends up being a problem with your husband! Dont stress, and good luck~

PS- They wont push IVF bc most insurance companies wont allow it without trying a few IUIs. You will most likely schedule a SA for your husband and the tube-dye test to check your tubes.

  • Good luck!

  • Good luck!!

The RE shouldn't push you towards IVF unless that is really the best option in your case.  You probably filled out a bunch of paperwork and, based on that, the doctor will have some recommendations, probably for some tests, unless you've already done that.

Yes, you will likely have an internal ultrasound today, and just that will give you and your doctor some information that will help chart your course of treatment.

Remember, we have a wealth of knowledge and experience on here, so, come back and ask questions when you get home!

  • Good luck!  Likely an internal, and my advice is to just CAUTIOUSLY approach any advice you are given--we saw three different REs, and got different advice each time--one pushing us to IVF right away, the other two to drugs right away.  Turns out, I went and switched obgyns and that regular doc figured it all out with one simple blood test.  I hate to be so cynical, but RE is a seriously big business, and you should definitely get second (and third) ops.  Again, best of luck to you!
  • I cant imagine an RE ever pressuring you to do anything. They usually give you their opinion and give options. If anything I was pressuring him to be more aggressive. The 1st appointment is the worst because you dont know what to expect but I remember after 2 long years it was the first time I felt like we had a plan and I wasnt just spinning my wheels. Good luck
  • good luck...don't worry, it's not bad at all and hopefully you'll be getting the help and answers you want

  • I remember being nervous and completely overwhelmed afterwards!

We sat with the dr. for about an hour, they did bloodwork on both of us and then an internal u/s on me.  We also met with the insurance department to find out what was covered and what was not covered.

And we came home with a suitcase full of information.
