DS has constipation issues and we went to a pediatric gastro dr (Dr Sunaryo in Livingston) today after struggling with this for months and trying different things. The dr said basically he's pretty sure he has a "slow bowel". He's testing him for gluten and lactose intolerance, so we'll see how that comes out. For now he's recommending Miralax every day as well as a pro biotic and prune juice. We'll see how it goes for 2-3 weeks and if it's better, then we'll continue with the Miralax for a few months, then try to wean him eventually.
He said it's very very common and there are many kids who take Miralax daily for the same issue. I just never heard of it for a kid and it makes me a little weary that he'll most likely be on it every day for a while, but I do trust the dr and he's a highly recommended.
What has your experience been with Miralax, does it help?! How long has your LO been on it?? TIA ![]()
Re: anyone else's kid take miralax?
The dosage might be too high, they shouldnt be loose they should be well formed but soft. I am an expert after our experience with the GI, he actually had models that you could feel to see what the consistency was you wanted. He wanted you to squish it in the diaper to make sure it was "just right"
i used to give it to Caleb every day. His low tone translates every where and if he gets backed up he doesnt have the tone to help push out hard stool..
BUT I read some pretty disturbing articles on the long term effects of daily use. I'm pretty sure it was Tina, (3guys&amomma) who posted about her son having a lot of gastric issues and she posted the links to the articles. It was pretty scary to read. We've since backed off of it and only give it to him if he REALLY needs it. Instead I load him up with pears, blueberries and other natural alternatives.
Hopefully she'll chime in.
Yea this is what I was thinking... I'm worried about long term effects. Maybe I'll do the 2 weeks like the dr recommended and see what happens. From there, maybe I'll give it to him as needed. I tried all the "natural" stuff and i don't give him constipating foods (bananas, yogurt, etc), but that still doesn't help!
Nope Caleb has had bananas maybe once or twice, when he was a baby and when he had the opposite issue. Never had rice or anything else known to bind. It really stinks..
The other we do is that he drinks ALL day. I make sure he's hydrated b/c that's a big contributor. He has his drinks with his meals but probably has about 4-5 (straw) cups in addition to that, throughout the day.
I just had to give miralax to him the other night since he hadn't gone in 3 days and for him that's BAD. But since we starting PT'ing, he wasn't going every day. But now he gets blueberries every day with his lunch and we're back to normal.
Good luck!! I know how hard it is to watch them suffer.Honestly I think it's just getting better as he's getting older so maybe your son will grow out of it as well.
