I hope I don't need any introdcution on this board! I didn't lurk before I posted. Sorry!
Anyway, I'm going to Australia for work and DH is going to come at the end of my work assignment and we're going to travel for a week.
Company policy is that they will pay for 2 economy tickets or 1 business class ticket on flights longer than 7 hrs. So DH's ticket is free.
My mom is a 1K traveler and has lots of unused System-Wide upgrades. As a birthday present she is going to give us upgrades for 2 of the 4 legs.
So, this leads me to my question: Should we each take business class going out there, when we'll be alone on the plane, or should we take business class coming home, when we'll be together?

I voted for biz on the way there and coach back. My husband and I did it that way when we went to the Cook Islands and we're doing it when we go to Japan this summer. We figure it helps us get over our jetlag and arrive ready to go for our vacation, whereas coming home we don't care as much. Also being alone I'd want the extra personal space business would offer, whereas coming back -- especially if you get a plane that's 2-4/5-2 and can get those outer seats -- you'd at least have two seats together.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Thanks ladies! My longest flight to date is 8 hours which I've done both business and economy.

I arrive Sunday morning around 7:30. I have to get myself to the hotel, and then I dont' have to work until Monday. So I've got about 24 hours. Plus the first 2 days of my work assignment are just "orientation"

I had the exact same thought process, especially the bolded. In coach, H and I can raise the armrest and get in more comfortable positions between the two seats than we would if we each just had to stick to our own space. I know it's a poll and democracy and all, but I think the majority is wrong here

This was part of my thought process as well. But then I thought maybe it would be nice to "Share" business class with him since he's never flown it, and part of me wants to see his reaction to everything.

i weighed both options and had some of the same thoughts but given that OP will have some time to get over jet lag and her DH has never flown business class, i would still stick with business the way back. especially for flights that long.
It would depend on the flights themselves. Are they both direct? If not, you stand the chance of not getting the upgrade on both legs. Also, which flight will you want to sleep on? I'd do business for that one. (This would be my biggest factor.) Will you have something to keep you occupied on both flights?
There are just so many logistical things to consider, that for me, my husband's reaction would be the least of my concerns.
