I've started working from home more often, and I've been surprised at the number of solicitors who show up at my door during the day. I was oblivious to it before because I wasn't home and no one leaves any literature or business cards behind. Is this normal? I'm not home every day but there have been at least three people who have been here unannounced since the beginning of the year.
If this happens to you, how do you handle it? My H has told me not to answer the door and to call the police to check up on them. That seems logical, but I feel like I am going to become that person who is calling the police every two weeks at this rate. What do SAHMs do? Or people who are on maternity leave? I would be so pissed if I had a sleeping baby and someone came and rang my doorbell during the day to try to sell me something.
Re: WWYD?
How annoying. I don't seem to get these on the days I work from home (majorly jealous by the way that you're getting to do this more often!).
Maybe you could try putting up a small sign on your door or by your doorbell that says "no solicitations." I thought I read somewhere long ago that people are required to respect that, but who knows. We did it at our old apartment because we kept getting Jehovah's Witnesses and I think it helped.
I haven't had a single solicitor.
I think calling the police is a bit over the top.
I'd either not answer the door, put a "No Solicitation" sign on the door, or answer and say "Please put me on a Do Not Contact list"

I have a sign I made from scrapbooking paper. One hangs from the knocker and says, "SHHHHHHH!!!! A baby lives here!"
If I had the nerve, I'd totally make one that said, "ALL solicitors will be shot immediately upon trespassing this property. So go away."
But it's legal here to shoot people for being on your property.
Ha! I hope that would work.
The only one I answered the door for (not sure what I was thinking) was Verizon. My dog was barking so loud that I couldn't hear a word they said, so I told them to leave. Now I just hide and try to peek out the windows if someone comes. It's so annoying.
One guy took one look at my dog and backed up so fast he fell down the front porch steps.
Another, when we first moved here, looked at my dog (I had my foster female lab back then) and said, "That is one serious motherf*cker" and walked away. i was like, "okay then."
Most of them are for churches, lawn services, and power washing, though sometimes we get the occasional meat sales, boy scouts, and Knology (like Comcast).
Hee! A dude I went to school with always answered his door with his two Dobermans in tow. (Back in the 80s/90s, when Dobermans were what pit bulls are now.) Somehow, whatever they were stopping by to chat about was suddenly not so important.
We've only had a couple of instances where people came to the door, but I do get harassed on the bus sometimes. There's a lot of Latter Day Saints in the Harvard Square/Belmont/Watertown area, and if you're not wearing headphones and/or looking sufficiently po'd, they'll totally start chatting with you. I know it's their thing, but I don't want to talk to anyone on my commute about anything other than how late/packed the bus is.
Your harassment stories are providing a lot of amusement to my Friday, Punky! LOL!
We get someone maybe once a month. Sometimes I answer but I usually pretend I'm not home. It's Jehovah's and Comcast most often. Since the move, we have had a ton of people by... Mostly oil companies. And Comcast came twice (both visits were after we already had Comcast hooked up... go figure!)
It is infuriating when someone stops by unannounced and rings the doorbell and the dog freaks out and wakes the baby. Infuriating. At the old house we got a white noise machine for his nap time. Luckily at the new house DS can't hear the dog bark at either door when he's napping.
The guy who looked at P and called her a "serious motherf*cker" was bringing me church materials too. Something about going with God. I have no idea.
But I was like, 'What about Arly? Is she not a serious motherf*cker?"
But Arly never barked at anything. Pumpkin will rip your throat out if she thinks you are going to hurt me (or DS).
I very rarely get anyone here, but we do not have sidewalks. The few times someone has come by I did not answer the door. It creeps me out because my house is set back, and with no sidewalks these people are driving to my house up the driveway. Creepy. I never answer the door.
When I nannied there were so many solicitors! I did almost call the police twice. It was the same company soliciting two years in a row. I would never answer the door, but these people peddling magazines would literally wait for someone to pull into their driveway and come running. Both years the guy (different guy each year) would not leave. He was giving me a really hard time about buying magazines from him, and I am pretty sure it was not legit.
