Took my DS to the ENT today because he showed mild hearing loss in the Summer (test at RIMM in Morristown) and he's been in EI for an expressive language delay as well as gross motor and some mild sensory issues. They recommended a retest and my son's pediatrician also suggested it.
The ENT I saw (Dr. Giacchi) noted fluid in his ears (moreso in his right), some issue with "movement" in his left ear and they did a hearing test, which showed mild to moderate loss in both ears. The recommendation was tubes and I was told that hearing loss due to fluid is completely reversible.
So my main questions are:
1) Anyone else use this doctor?
2) Any suggestions for a 2nd opinion.
Thanks!
Re: Ped ENT / Tubes Question
i don't know that doc (we saw Dr. Sorvino in morristown).... but i can say that Grayson was IMMEDIATELY happier and could hear more after the ear tube surgery.... we were home within an hour after it began - and he was happy playing and had less tantrums, etc- THAT DAY b/c he could hear better.
His speech has improved a great deal in the past year (he also goes to speech therapy).
My biggest regret as a mom is that I waited so long for him to get tubes... if he had them sooner he might not be so behind with speech... it was THE EASIEST and fastest surgery there could be- i was shocked.
I'd do it - no 2nd opinion need IMO.... yes, putting them under is scary- but it's so damn fast and simple - and helps SO much. Not to mention no more ear infections (likely... Gray has not had any since he got the tubes last year).
I was hoping you'd reply, Gail, since I remembered you're in the area and that Grayson had them. And Dr. Giacchi is in the same group as Dr. Sorvino.
Aaron didn't have any infections his 1st two years, but he got his first one about 10 days before he turned 2 and has had two more in the last 6 months. So it's less about that and more about him hearing better and, hopefully, getting even further caught up with his speech therapy.
We also used that practice for my oldest--he had tubes put in at 11 months and his tonsils and adenoids out last January. Dr. Kanowitz was the dr we used. From what I hear, the office and all the doctors are great and we loved Dr. Kanowitz.
Marcus had some moderate hearing loss due to the fluid and constant infections prior to the tubes. 3 weeks after the tubes were in, his hearing loss was completely reversed and he started talking more almost immediately IMO.
The surgery itself wasn't too bad for him and he was back to normal after a nice long nap. The worst part of it was him coming out of the anesthesia. Not sure where the procedure would be but we had the tubes done in Morristown (111 Madison Ave) and the tonsils done in Denville at a Surgery Center off Rt 10--the center in Denville was GREAT with Marcus--even let him borrow a portable DVD player during recovery with Cars playing on it. The nurses were great there, too.
