Can you use a rice cooker for other things?

Can you use a rice cooker to cook....

beans? oats? barley? quinoa? anything else?

Anyone try this? I've always debated getting a rice cooker, but could never justify it because we don't eat that  much rice.

Also, I've made brown rice before but it always feels tough and undercooked. Would a rice cooker help with that?

Re: Can you use a rice cooker for other things?

  • I've used it for quinoa the same way you make rice. There are rice cookers that have multiple settings. I have the Aroma multicooker, and it makes white rice, brown rice, steams, and is also a slow cooker. it was like $30 at costco, and I've used the slow cooker function a few times already.

  • I've actually cooked a rice and chicken meal in mine before.  Other than that, I've just done rice, but I know you can do other things.  We do brown rice in it all the time, comes out great.  :-)

  • We do rice and quinoa in ours, it works beautifully for brown rice.

  • Kath of katheats has been making oats in hers and it looks like a good idea..set it up the night before like your coffee maker and it automatically turns on and cooks your breakfast!
  • We use ours to steam veggies a lot

  • my dad's rice maker has a cake button.  No clue what it does, but assuming it magically makes cake.

  • I need to get one of these....My brown rice is always too firm for my liking and seems like a good way to steam veggies!

    Great topic!
