toy organizing and purging.
toys are over filling my house. what do you do with old toys that dont get used anymore? will goodwill take trash bags of toys? i feel bad getting rid of their stuff. anyone else feel guilty getting rid of toys.
Re: toy organizing and purging.
Yes, I do it when they are not here or asleep. My 5 year old is a packrat and would keep everything.
Options for toy donations:
1-Goodwill
2-Church Nurserys/Preschools/MMO
3-Local indoor play areas (we have a bouncy place here that I've given a few things to for younger siblings that are too young to bounce)
4-Children's consignment sales--I have sold a few things recently and all my toys sold---I priced Little People Sets at in a zip bag for $3.00, Mega Blocks in a zip bag for $3.00. It adds up quick if you have a bunch.
5-Homeless shelters
Start by packing up toys they don't play with and put them into large bins. If a toy is asked for you know they want it back. Take that toy out and pack away the rest. If, in six months, no other toys are asked for, then donate the ones in the bins.
You can also rotate toys using the bin method. Take four or five bins, separate all the toys into bins and leave one bin's worth of toys out. In three or four weeks, pack up all the toys that are out - not the super special ones that are loved or played with all the time - and pull out one of the other bins.
Make note of what is played with and what isn't and pull the ones not played with after about a week and put it in the donation bin. Once the bin is full, donate it.
I take toys my DS has outgrown or upgraded from and donate them to Goodwill. For large items, I usually do consignment. I also rotate toys that I think are still a good fit for him, but that he doesn't play with constantly.
I don't feel bad. He has plenty to play with, and having too many toys, especially if they are disorganized and all over the place, makes it really hard for him to enjoy what he has.
