I'm in marketing and haven't applied for a job outside of my current company for 7 years. So, I decided to brush up on what managers are looking at. Online all over it says to have a cover letter that is UNIQUE (duh). It says this isn't a place to "summarize" your resume anymore, it's supposed to reflect your personality and catch the attention of the reader. "They" say to add humor, etc.
So, I wrote a new cover letter. I just feel so weird not submitting something that feels as professional as before.
I know you can't believe everything you read, thoughts?

Re: Unique Cover Letter?
It can be professional and still reflect your personality while catching someone's attention.
The humor thing sounds weird.
I'd have to see what the CL looks like to comment on what I thought about it's "uniqueness".

"Once upon a time a young girl eagerly joined Girl Scouts. In her first year, she was so excited that she sold more Girl Scout cookies than any of her friends. Her determination and skill increased rapidly through the next few years, until ultimately she sold more boxes of cookies than all of the other girls combined! Yes, I am telling my own story, and I realize you may be wondering where I am going with it. Every great story has a beginning - mine just happened to be as a 5 year old girl selling cookies. Marketing is simply what I was born to do.
I went on to breaking sales records during my 4 year career at XXXX before departing on to XXXXX. Here, I?ve been part of a small team who worked on their Western Expansion project, excelled at several departments within claims, and now employed as a Senior Direct Agent for XXXX. I have enjoyed working at our local agency, and helped with local events around the area.
At XXX I studied marketing tactics in depth ? both business to consumer and business to business. I?ve written several business/marketing forecasts, plans, and proposals. I worked full time during my college career, and still graduated with honors in my class.
After reviewing my resume, you will find I am offering ABC Company almost 7 years of insurance experience, and even more experience in sales. If you are seeking an employee with strong communication skills, excellent time management ability and confidence, you will greatly benefit from my education and industry understanding. I want to thank you very much for taking the time to consider me for this position. I look forward continuing my story with ABC Company!"

I'm going to be honest: I actually kind of liked it! It's creative (for a marketing field, which is good) and really sells you. I'd make a few minor changes, since there are places you need to hold back less, and places you need to hold back more. Here are my suggestions:

Thanks! That made me feel a lot better .. I was scared after the first comment of "I'm going to be honest" lol!
I like the changes ... I'm going to look for ways to maybe shorten it up a bit - thanks!
Overall I really liked it too. It definitely will make you stand out.
I did hesitate when I first read the "Once upon a time" opening.... not the story you tell about selling cookies (loved that!) but just specifically that phrase "Once upon a time."
I don't know maybe it's just me. When it comes to jobs, interviews & CL I tend to err more on the traditional side; although I'm not in marketing/sales & I am certainly not a risk taker, lol. Good luck!
As a hiring manager I am rolling my eyes big time. Though I don't work in marketing.
As someone with journalism training, this is a bit wordy. Always look at your writing and eliminate extraneous words. I would remove the phrase " through the next few years", and the comma before until is incorrect. No commas before dependent clauses that appear in the latter half of a sentence.
I admit the "once upon a time" threw me for a loop too. Maybe you could nix that part.
i was also taken aback by the first line. i think that the initial story is a great lead-in, but that first line works against you.
also, your question made me think of this recent news item that's been going around, about when uniqueness in cover letters can really backfire: http://www.metro.us/newyork/life/article/1094224--this-ridiculous-jpmorgan-cover-letter-is-the-laughingstock-of-wall-street
I think I just threw up a little bit.
Good input, I kinda feel the same way about the Once upon a time ... any suggestions on what to use instead?
I was thinking:
"Several years ago ..."
Or maybe just cutting it out completely and starting with "A young girl"
