Hi ladies, I introduced myself many months ago when relocating to MA was a pipedream. H recently found out his job will be transferring up north (yay!) so now I'm on a mad house/job hunt. I have a realllllly crappy commute (about 40 miles and over an hour on bad days) currently so we're trying to avoid that if possible this time around.
A major job prospect is located in Beverly, but H will actually be working in Portsmouth NH--he's willing to make more a commute since he travels most of the time, but I'm finding properties we really like in Amesbury, Newbury, even Andover. Anyone have experience commuting south from any of those places? Am I looking at another hour commute? A friend in the area said there's really only one way in and out of Beverly...not sure what that really means. Any help is appreciated!

Re: Commuting to Beverly?
Don't commute from any of those towns to Beverly if you want a short commute. There is no direct way to get there and you'll end up taking back roads or going way out of your way on the highway.
Your friend is kind of right that there is only one way in and out of Beverly. It's better than Salem though. Beverly is along the 128 highway so you will want to look at towns with easy access to 128, which is also I-95 once you hit Peabody (I think it's Peabody, anyway).
If your H is going to Portsmouth it would be good for him, too, because he can take 128 to 95 N. Probably the best towns for you geographically would be Beverly, Danvers, and Peabody.
Are you looking to buy or rent?
I know this is a little old, but I saw it and figured I would give my .02 in case it helps. I went to school in Beverly and had a good friend who lived in North Hampton NH (just south of Portsmouth). It took 45 minutes to get from school to her mom's. That's not rush hour though.
The traffic will be worse for you since you'll likely be heading south on 95 to get to 128. Once you're on 128 north it won't be too bad though. Your husband should have it pretty easy going north on 95. So with all that in mind, I would say you should look closer to Beverly since you'll have a tougher commute.
I'd look maybe at Topsfield or Boxford. I think the towns you listed will make a much longer commute for you than your husband though.
