What size do you make a quilt for a baby?

Sorry, I think I posted this about a year ago and never made the quilt. I tried going through my old posts but I couldn't find it.

My SIL's shower is coming up and I wanted to make something special. (First baby in the family!)

Thanks.

Re: What size do you make a quilt for a baby?

  • Depends on the pattern I pick.  Somewhere between 36" x 40" and 48" x 48".

I can give you some pattern suggestions if you want to tell me what your skill level/ familiarity with quilting is.

  • I don't make quilts, but I would love ones that are large enough to be used as a "spread" for a crib size mattress.  LA has a beautiful quilt that matches her room amazingly (which was pure coincidence--but a great one).  It is too small to cover her mattress.  We are getting ready to switch her to a toddler bed and it would have been nice to be able to use it as a cover.

That being said, all handmade blankets, regardless of size, are wonderful gifts :)

A normal crib sized mattress is usually about 28" x 52" x 5", so the quilt would have to be about 40" x 64" to use as a spread if you want to use that as a guide.

  • I've never really thought about this before.  I just buy the packaged batting (warm & natural) & the baby size batting is 45x60.  You need to leave a few inches off each end for when you make the quilt sandwich.  So mine tend to be 40-42"x52-55".  I love the idea of making one the size that can be used as a cover as the child grows.  Thanks for that.
