If you've been to both, which city has more to do or which one is nicer? It would be me and a single girlfriend going. We like to hike, shop, eat out, and party! Thanks!
Re: Asheville or Nashville?
For me, I'd choose Asheville, hands down. That said, it's not a great place to party, although there are a few bars.
Nashville is pretty much just a typical decent sized city. Asheville is small, artsy, and charming. There are some cool art galleries (not the snooty, upscale type, but with cool folk art, photography, etc), cute little shops (including chocolate shops, cool bookstore, coffee shops, old fashioned general store, etc), the most amazing spa I've ever been to (Grove Park Inn), and some really fantastic restaurants. I'd describe the city as a little bit crunchy granola. Of course, there is also the Biltmore estate and winery which you can tour, and there are plenty of places to hike in the area.
i am dying to go to nashville. my hubby travels all over the us and it's one of his favortie cities, that and seattle he says. i don't know much about asheville, but that sounds cute too. sounds like you can't really go wrong. have fun!
ps. i am a huge country music fan, so nashville just seems like heaven to me.
I used to live in Nashville. It's not the type of town that offers anything for a girlie weekend unless you're into hitting all the country music historic stops. It's like every other mid-sized city: traffic, chain stores, chain restaurants, a couple good independent restaurants, good areas, bad areas. The biggest detractor to Nashville is the sprawl - there might be an art gallery in East End, but you'll have to cross town to get to the cool restaurant 15 miles away...Eh, it's a pain, especially because navigating is difficult (poor signage, narrow streets, congestion) if you're not familiar.
On the other hand, I adore Asheville. It's the best place for a weekend getaway! Like PPs have said, there are some bars, but it's not a partying kind of place. Great restaurants, great little shops, fabulous B&Bs (take your pick - we loved the Black Walnut), and the Biltmore is a fabulous experience!
