Virgin Islands

My DH just booked a charter sailboat for 6 nights late fall. Looking for people who have been and any must see, visit and do. We like history, nature, snorkeling. We like to be away from the crowds so are not interested in any cruise ports.

Re: Virgin Islands

  • BVI - Tortola is a lot of fun and the other islands... Jost van D y k e is one... have great snorkeling, especially if you're on the water.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • Are you picking up your charter in Tortola? We have done two bareboat charters in the BVI picking up our boat in Road Town. There is so much to see down there and the sailing is very easy since it is all line of sight. The islands are small so the only cruise ports to begin with are on Tortola and St. Thomas. I assume you will not be sailing to St. Thomas anyway as it is further away. If you stop in the USVI at all it will be St. John and you will need to clear customs.

On both we started by sailing over to the Dog Islands where there is some good snorkeling. Norman Island is worth a stop to visit the floating bar the Willy T. If you moor in this area keep in mind the Willy T gets a little crazy but it is definitely worth checking out.  The Baths on Virgin Gorda are of course the biggest must see as well as a stop on JVD to go to the Soggy Dollar Bar where you either swim ashore or have to dinghy in.  Foxy's is also a great spot for dinner with live music.

On our last trip we loved our stop at Scrub Island which is a private island resort. Marina guests have full access to all amenities unlike Peter Island so I highly recommend a stop there if you want a little luxury. The have a lovely pool and fantastic spa facilities if you want to book a massage or the like.

Are you bareboating or will you have a crew? Anegada is a beautiful island but further out so you either need more sailing experience or a crew to sail there. Loblolly is a stunning beach to visit.

Pick up a copy of Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands. It is a wonderful resource that lists all the moorings and marinas in the VI as well as what is located at each place. It is indispensable for planning a sailing trip. Have a great trip! It is such a wonderful way to see the islands. We're planning a trip to sail the Leewards right now!

  • I agree Foxys on JVD Is fun.

My favorite Bvis is Virgin Gorda. Get a massage at Little Dix if possible.

  • Thanks.

We were sent a copy of the Cruising Guide by our charter company. We will have a crew. I am not sure where we start as DH made the arrangements. I have time to figure that out. We plan to stay 1 or 2 nights in PR on the way as our cruise starts on a Monday.
