Here's our kitchen

I want to paint it and I'm leaning towards a red, like a brick red. My problem is the cabinets are kind of orange. The floor is a cool grey, and the counters are a grey, black, white granite.

Can I get away with a red with those cabinets? We may eventually reface them, but paint is a cheaper way to redo the kitchen for the moment.

i would ask a colour consultant at a paint store on that one. I bet there's a red paint out there that will work, I would just be sure to pick the wrong one.

That's what I'm worried about. I went through 3 or 4 colors before doing the current one in desperation. At least this time I know enough to buy a sampler can.

I wouldn't just because it would bring out more of the orange in the cabinets. I would do a greenish grey. It will help balance out the orange. Orrr you could paint your cabinets white?? I did it a couple months back and LOVE it.

This might sounds strange, but what about a light blue? On the color wheel, orange (re: cabinets) are right across from blue, which means they are complimentary colors. Of course, you'd have to find the exact correct shade. I wouldn't go in the baby or powder blue field. Get lots of samples! Stick out tongue I also love the PP idea of going white on the cabinets, you wouldn't have to do a stark white, but maybe something softer.

Our cabinets are sort of that orangey color too. We have a grayiish backsplash and kind of balck and orangish granite and we went with an olive green. I think it balances the orange nicely. I also don't think I'd personally do red with those cabinets, but the right red could probably work.

Picking blue will make your cabinets carrot orange. If you find a red with brown undertones, so more earthy than true red, it will balance out the hue. I have the same color cabinets and I went towards the other side of orange, I picked a beige-y yellow and it sort of works. My floors are a hideous dark green, so the tones are thrown off a bit. I'm gearing myself up to paint them white soon. I've been saying that for about a year now though...

I don't know if red is over or not, and I don't really care. I don't pick paint colors based on that, I go with what I like.

This is the one I like:

I'm also open to the grey/green, although our living room, which you can see from the kitchen is already that kind of shade. It's pretty olive looking. Our dining room is an orange called cinnamon stick.

ETA: I didn't mean that to come across biitchy. I imagine I'll have to paint everything if we ever sell, so for the moment I just want to go with what I like and not really what's in.

The color you like looks more terracotta and your kitchen will be very orange. But if it's what you like then do it. To me it's no bueno.

If not green a slate blue would be super pretty. I can't find a picture of a kitchen, but something like this color.

I like this idea - I think it will brighten it up, and will be a lot easier to get right. I think it could be extremely tough to get the right red in there and have it look nice.

My BFF had similar-colored cabinets in her old place and painted the walls a bright apple green. It looked fantastic. I'm not a bright walls person, but am liking this color.

I would get a few sample cans and paint over the sink/stove with each color to see what looks best. It's got to work with the granite and the black range, too.

I like that green actually. I've always wanted a red or terracotta kitchen, but I think until we can redo the kitchen here I'll have to give up on that dream. But I hate the current brown too. It was this berry color when we moved in that I thought was fine, but Arthur hated it. We should have just left it. Blerg. Someone pick for me.

Actually, I probably will suck it up and get a bunch of sample cans and test.

I just remembered that I was a lazy painter and there is a patch of the old color behind the stove. Maybe I'll just paint it back.
