Asking, "Are you willing to sell?"

DH and I are getting ready to move to a new city.

We saw a home online that we liked and would like to visit in-person. But right now, it is off the market as of a few days ago.

If we can determine that it wasn't sold, and the sellers just removed it from the market or that the listing contract simply expired, do you think it would be weird to contact them directly and see if they are still willing to sell it?

Obviously if they relist, this question is moot. But, if they don't relist...

I've heard of things like this happening where buyers contact a seller and see if they still want to sell. Anyone know of someone, or have you done this, who contacted homeowners to see if they were willing to sell?

  • There was a post on here from a seller awhile back who was contacted after taking down the listing and she was still open to selling. I don't think it's weird to try it at all - we've done it with two properties with no luck, but I still think it's worth a shot if you really like it.
  • You won't know unless you ask.  The worst they can say is no.  

    I know my parents are DESPERATELY trying to sell their home but as more & more time goes by they took it off the market for a short time before deciding to try again.  In their case, they didn't like to always be "staged" & ready to leave the house in a moments notice.  It also allowed them to go on vacation & not worry about people wanting to see the house.

  • We are under contract for a house that was no longer listed (we close in March).

  • Your Realtor can contact their Realtor and see if they are still interested. It isn't that uncommon. But, you should be fairly well prepared personally to act should you decide you like it. You wouldn't want to disturb them if you are not ready and able to act.

    This. If you would be ready to put in an offer if you like what you see in person, go for it! LIke someone else said, worst that they can say is "no". 

  • The worst that can happen is the say no. A friend of mine didn't even have her house for sale and someone rang her bell and asked if they could buy the house. It wasn't in their plans, but they went for it. Stranger things have happened!
