scrap storage quetion...

I go back and forth with storing my quilting scraps.  I've gone through phases with just throwing everything into a box and phases where I've organized and cut 2 inch, 2 1/2 inch squares, 3 inch squares and 1, 2, 2 1/2 and 3 inch strips.  Choice 2 is so time consuming, but it's more organized for when and if I use them.

Do you have any methods? I'm very overwhelmed by my scraps lately.

Re: scrap storage quetion...

  • I do option 2- but I use gallon sized ziploc baggies so I can just throw them in when I'm finished working on a project.  It is a good mix, and I can just toss the bags in the canvas cube labelled "scraps" in my storage unit.

  • I got these really nifty zip-close pouches that have holes punched in the side so they can fit into a binder. I don't know how many scraps you have, but this might be a good idea for you since you don't seem to have anything larger than 3 inches. I keep my stencils organized this way and just slide the binder on a shelf. I think I got them at Archiver's or another scrapbooking type place but I have seen larger ones in other parts of the craft stores.

  • I like the idea of organizing the scraps into a binder or maybe even some sort of box file system.  I've made 121 quilts so far, so I have oodles of scraps.  If I organized them by color maybe that would work.  I need to do something, I'm so far behind...who wants to take on that project for me?!   Choosing between organizing and starting a new project...well, the organizing never wins.  Somedays I feel like throwing the whole thing out.  Of course I couldn't bring myself to actually do that...but I've thought of it.
