Spain

DH and I are thinking of going to Spain in June.  Any suggestions, neither of us has ever been before and are looking to stay between five and seven days.

Ideally, we would like to be able to see Barcelona and spend a few days at a beach relaxing.  Any suggestions...

Re: Spain

  • Barcelona is great, I love it! What are you looking for in terms of a beach vacation?
Touristy beach areas where English is spoken? "Authentic," non-touristy Spain? Do you want to travel from Barcelona to another area (car, plane, how long?)

I'm completely in love with the area where I live. The only thing is that it's an 8-hour drive from Barcelona and the water is Bay of Biscay, chilly Atlantic water whereas if you stick to the Barcelona area you'll have Mediterranean beach water.

  • If you go to Barcelona--- I would say of course do the tourist attractions--- La Sagrada Familia, The Gaudi apartments, the open air market (make sure you find sugared, dried, strawberries -- oh my delicious)!  But my biggest suggestion is to go to the Cathedral (not Sagrada Familia-- It's La Seu I think)  on a Sunday morning (to enter the Cathedral your shoulders must be covered--- no revealing clothing.  The local people dance in front of the Churches on Sunday-- it's a local folk dance called the Sardana.  It is amazing.  And fun--- they let us join in when we went--- actually, when they found out we spoke Catalan, they MADE us join in :)

I would take the overnight train to Granada and make sure you get in the Alhambra too!

And if you have time--- how can you miss Madrid and all of the amazing museums (El Prado, La Reina Sofia) and the royal Palace!

  • Thanks, ladies. We are still figuring out what we want to do, but this has given me some really good ideas.

    Please keep them coming!
