How many high school sweethearts?

I noticed in the "put things in order" post that lots of people knew their DH before they graduated high school.

How many of you are high school sweethearts?  Did you stay together straight through or have some little breaks along the way?  Or maybe you met each other but hadn't started dating until later?

Re: How many high school sweethearts?

  • Started dating my junior/his senior year of high school... been together ever since.

    Almost 13 years!

  • MH & I started dating February of my senior year but we were friends before that,  will be together 10 years next Thursday! He graduated 2 years before me.

  • This is amazing! I didn't meet MH until I was 32-- and thank my lucky stars I didn't marry my high school boyfriends!

I can't wait to hear more of these stories! (Good post, Darcie!)

  • DH and I started dating at the beginning of my senior/his junior year in high school and have been together every since- 12+ years! This includes 6 years of long-ish distance while I was in college/grad school.

Darcie and I went to HS together so maybe our school just has good long term love vibes! :)

  • I was engaged to my high school sweetheart but broke it off after 6 years. I'd say things worked out quite nicely.
  • There has got to be something in the water... because I went to the same high school as DCBF and Tibbs.

I wish I could go back and see how many times I was in the near vacinity of DH during our childhoods.  We grew up in different towns, but they shared youth teams for baseball and football.  I cheered for DH's football team one year (6th grade) and I'm sure I watched him play baseball.

We were also in the same freshman English class, but didn't talk until our junior year when we were trying to set up our friends (I had a bf at the time.)  We've been together ever since (10 years in November.)

  • DH and I went to different high schools, but met the summer before my junior year and started dating once the school year started up. It was a pain since he was 20 minutes away, so we only saw each other on weekends. He was my first kiss a month after I turned 16!

We graduated a year ahead of me and we stayed together through the start of my freshman year of college. Then I got to college and wanted to make out with other guys. So we broke up, got back together at over the summer, and I broke up with him again my sophomore year. Tongue Tied I promised that I wasn't going to keep doing that, so if it was meant to be, it would happen down the road but I still wanted him in my life as a good friend.

Although we weren't as close for the rest of college, I still considered him a good to best friend and we hung out quite a bit the year after I graduated. He was living at home on the north shore of MA and working in Boston, and I lived right outside of the city, so he'd stay over a couple of nights a week to save on the commute. He always slept on the sleeper sofa, we never kissed while we were apart, and it was strictly platonic.

BUT... our hugs goodbye were always weird and felt off. I had a sit down with myself to ponder my feelings. I thought, "I really like Adam. He's a top friend. I want him around for lots of the milestones in my life like my wedding and hearing about children and work accomplishments. I want to hear about his stuff. I also get really angry at the thought of someone else being in the "wife" role in his life and get extremely jealous. And the idea of me being married to someone else and sharing those big life things of mine is also weird. Hm, I think he might be it for me."

So, I asked him on our second "first date" to which he said yes without missing a beat. I told him that this was it- we were going to try one more time and if it didn't work, we were going to have to part ways forever because I didn't think I could handle being out of his inner circle because it would always be weird.

We dated for 1.5-2 years, he proposed, and 2 years later we were married. That was over 6 years ago!  I'm now to the point where he has been in my life for more than half of it- 17 of my 33 years, with around 14 being committed to each other.  Smile

  • Us too!  DH and I also went to separate high schools and met through mutual friends, though I was dating someone else at the time.  We became really good friends and finally started dating when I was a junior (he is a year older.)  I think what helped us was that he went to a local college the first two years, so we didn't have to make the decision to do long-distance until I graduated and moved to Rhode Island for school.  It was tough, but we made it (he eventually transferred to a school in Massachusetts, so we saw each other about once every couple of months or so) - we did "break up" for 3 torturous weeks the summer before my senior year of college, but were back together by the time I was going back up there.  It was 14 years in December - though we've only been married 3.5.  We took the scenic route :)

  • I have been friends with DH since we were freshman in highschool.  But we didn't  start dating until  the end of senior year.  So I have known him for about 15ish years we have been together 11.5 and married 5!

Where in RI did you go to school?

  • Dang, and I thought MH and I had known each other a long time!  (We met in October of '93, freshman year of college.)  I can't imagine marrying anyone I knew in high school. :)
