moms of 3 yo's and up

a "booster" car seat question...

do you know when you switched from the convertible to the booster?  at the moment, we are no where near ready but i am trying to determine if we will need to have 2 convertibles at once.  DH has a second car, mostly a commuting/train car, but he uses it to put around on the weekend.  it's older and has less airbags, so we never got a car seat for that car.  lately we've had a lot going on- on the weekends where it would be useful to have a car seat in both cars.  so he asked me to look into getting a "cheap car seat" for his car so we dont have to worry about playing musical cars.  personally i'm not fond of this idea.  car seats are just one place i kinda refuse to be cheap on- at least when it comes to safety.  anyway, i'm thinking- we switched sue to the convertible right around 1 yo- maybe earlier, i honestly dont remember.  i'm wondering if i'm going to need 2 convertibles anyway for both kids.  (then i just buy a good one now and put it in the 2nd car for the time being.) figure sue would be 3 1/2 yo but she's tall and thin when the baby is 1.  so at 3 1/2 yo and tall and thin- would that be anywhere near booster territory? i know the car seat regs say wait as long as possible- but by the new regs and her weight she would probably be in an infant seat right thru kindergarten if she wasnt so tall.  so realistically, what did you do?

  • Fwiw, we have a "cheap" convertible in bothnA and my parents care, but it was one of the top 5 rated seats.  cosco scenara I believe it's called.  Sorry cant help you with he rest!

  • I'm not going to be much help since I still have A in the convertable.  But he's like your DD is - tall & thin.  We have the Britax Boulevard and it goes up to 70 lbs and 49 inches.  A is about 43 inches and 35 lbs right now.  I plan on keeping him in this as long as possible, which seems like we're going to hit the height requirement waaaay before the weight.  I say another year is probably all we're going to get out of it since he's so tall.  After he outgrows it I plan on getting a Britax Frontier booster seat.

The Frontier has a 5 point harness but you can use the lap belt as well as they get older.  Since it has the harness you could use the frontier for her and use the convertable for the new baby.  The low limits on the Frontier are 25 lbs & 30 inches so it sounds like she would be able to use it at 3.5 yo.
