Questions for Teachers: RE letters of reference

I'm applying this spring to get out of my school and hopefully into one that is a better fit, but I'm stuck when it comes to letters of reference. I know getting one from my current principal would be awesome, but then I would need to tell my current principal I'm looking for another job which I don't really want to do in case I don't get one. I have one from a mentor teacher (from my program to finalize my credential) that is brand new, but all my other letters are from '08-'09 or from student teaching. Clearly I wouldn't use the ones from student teaching as those are 5 years old, but what is the statute of limitations on letters of reference from say an old principal or adviser? Who else could I go to for a letter of reference? I have another teacher who has observed me as part of her job as a teacher coach, but she's also a friend so that seems a little weird to me. Districts around here usually want 3 letters of reference. Thanks!

Re: Questions for Teachers: RE letters of reference

  • I would definitely ask other teachers for letters, especially ones that have seen you teach.

    This.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the fact that you consider your co-worker your friend.  That's only going to work in your favor when she writes you an amazing recommendation letter. Especially because as a "coach" I would think she not only observes you but also offers advice/suggestions & has probably watched you grow as an educator over time.  GL!

  • I agree- ask other teachers. Depending on how your school is set up, do you have any other 'jobs' within the school. Some of my teacher friends here have jobs within discipline areas of the school and interact with guidance and others within administration. They'd get references from them. I have had a few teacher friends who did tell that they were looking. In their cases it was life events (marriage, pregnancy, family events) that made the change welcome from both sides.
  • I've been meaning to ask the same question. I just want to get my feelers out there. I'm really stuck on asking people -- besides coworkers.

  • If you have a direct supervisor I would list them as well.

Also, if you co-teach or work closely with a Special Education teacher I would list them. Especially if they have knowledge of your willingness to work with IEP's/504's and with students of all abilities.

  • I agree with all of the above posters.

I've been on our hiring committee countless times and it's very unusual to see a recommendation letter from a current principal. I've only seen it in cases where the teacher has relocated and won't be returning to her current school regardless of hiring outcome. My principal will wait to call the candidate's current principal until we've decided on that particular candidate. It is the last thing she does before extending an offer. So, there is no expectation of a letter of reference from your current principal (unless you are relocating) but we do expect to have some contact with your current principal at some point.
