How soon can I start traveling with a child?

Hi All,

My husband and I love to travel and very soon want to start adding to our family! We would love to keep up with our traveling regimen after we have our child and want to take them with us but what is the appropriate age to start traveling with them? On airplanes, long road trips, train trips, etc? I think exposure is important and we would love for our children to have that exposure at an early age. Of course without jeopardizing their help or development. Thanks in advance!

  • Read through the posts from yesterday linked above.

All four of my kids started traveling between 6 and 8 weeks of age.  I cleared all travel that early with their doctor first.  They are great little travelers.  We are to a point where I can take all four of them on road trips or plane trips on my own.  They range from 4-13.

  • i think i was about 6 months old when i went on my first trip. it also depends on the kid obviously.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • We didn't really go anywhere with DS until he was 1, but that's just because we were too tired to go anywhere. After that we've made several road trips and one big trip to Europe.

  • By the time my daughter was 1 she had been on 4 round trip air trips all over the country (her first trip was at 3 months).  Before she was 2 she had done all of that again and we we had taken her on a 20 day trip to Europe.  I would start sooner rather than later (unless there are health reasons) because practice makes perfect! ;-)
  • Definitely sooner than later! Both my kids had 2 passports (dual citizens) by 2 months.

  • You can pretty much start traveling immediately.  I flew on a plane with LO when he was two weeks old.
  • my son's first plane ride was when he was about 3-4 months old to savannah, ga. it was so easy, as soon as the engine turned on he would fall asleep, lol.
  • We went to The Smoky Mountains and rented a cabin and flew when our son was 6 months old and he did great on the plane going there but on the way back he was sick with a cold so he had a bad time.
