Carpet and installation recommendations

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with using Empire today carpeting?  We're looking to get the upstairs in our 1 1/2 story carpeted and this seems convenient.  What about Home Depot or Menards?

We're planning to get multiple bids, but just thought I would see if these places are even worth checking out.

Any local places you've liked?

Thanks!

Re: Carpet and installation recommendations

  • We just got new bedroom carpet (including installation) from Seestedt's in St. Paul. They were fantastic, locally owned, and they've been in business since 1918! They had great remnants and discounts. Highly recommend.

I would also recommend checking out Metro Carpet Outlet in Minneapolis. They are also locally owned, and have EXTREMELY low-priced remnants. We couldn't find the right carpet there, but would have gone with them in a heartbeat had we found something. Really great owners, knowledgeable about carpet and super-helpful.

I would not recommend Carpet King. The salesperson there did not know a thing about carpet...not at all impressed.

  • Menards does not have installers last I checked.  You purchase the carpet from them and then they have a case of business cards to choose an installer, but they are not affiliated and you have to deal with the installer if there is an issue with the install.

Empire, Home Depot and Lowes all use independent contractors.  DH has done work through Lowes and they do have a good watch over their contractors. They have to follow a set of rules and have random drop-bys from management while they are working.  I don't know about Home Depot or Empire (I know a lot of installers are not fans of Empire).

Our friend owns Allied Flooring in South St. Paul.  They employ all of their installers and do a great job.

I can't vouch for the customer/sales service at Bloomington Carpet and Floor anymore (they sold to Abbey Carpet last year), but some of the installers my DH used to work with still get their work from them and do a great job.

If you have any other carpet questions I can help, just let me know.

  • We got carpet installed from Home Depot and were very pleased with the results.  My dad was here while they were doing the install and said he would hire them in a heart beat.  Home Depot is pretty cheap too.  I think it's $130 for the whole house, not including stairs.

We used Allied Flooring and they were great. Very nice and no high pressure sales. Very knowledgeable and very nice. I would use them again.

Stay far far away from Empire. The carpet is poor quality and they are WAY overpriced.  My FIL paid twice as much 5 years ago as we just paid a month ago for the exact same area and we used top of the line carpet. the stuff we took out of here was worn through in many spots and it was only 5 years old. Check out BBB. They have tons of customer complaints.

    Good luck.

  • We only use Schneider Carpet on West 7th in Saint Paul. They are a locally owned family business that has been around forever. Highly recommend them! We like to support local businesses as much as we can. My parents have used them for years as well.

Have fun! I love getting new flooring.

  • Thanks for all the replies!  I won't even check out Empire- I thought that I hadn't heard good things about them and from your comments, it's not worth it.

I also like to support local businesses so I will definitely be checking into those companies!

  • Another question:  How long did it take for them to install the carpet?  I'm hoping to get it done by the end of the month at the latest, if possible.  Does that sound do-able?

It will mostly depend on the carpet you purchase.  If it is in their warehouse it can be installed fairly quickly.  If it has to be ordered it will take longer.
