BR: What would you give?

H's cousin and his wife are having a baby soon. They live 10+ hours away and we're not sure when we'll see them again, so we'd like to mail them a gift.
I checked for registries online from all the typical stores (Target, Babies R Us, Kohl's, etc.) and they're not registered anywhere that I can find. I usually buy directly off people's registries, so now I'm clueless.
This is their first child, I think they've had 1 or 2 showers, and I don't know what they do and don't have yet.
Any ideas for something that won't go unused? Having extra blankets or toys could never hurt, right? FWIW, it's a boy.

If they don't have a registry and you don't know what they have, you can get them anything from a store like babies-r-us, target, or even Amazon.com if you include a gift receipt. The will use the store credit if your gift is a duplicate. Or just a bunch of diapers. Babies use a lot of 'em.
I'm not a baby person either, so I have always either bought from registries or gone way generic. Or asked the parents what they want. A lot of people I know have asked for books for their kids. Or you can always get something for the new parents, like a gift card to the movies or a nice restaurant for when they get their first night out away from the baby.
I'm a big fan of diapers (not newborn), wipes, GCs, books. Boppies are great if they don't already have one and it's nice to find covers that go with their theme or color scheme.
I try not to give: clothes, toys, lotions, soaps, formula, bottles, pacifiers, stuffed animals.

I'm hesitant to give diapers just because I don't know if they plan to use cloth or disposable. I considered giving them something for their nursery, but I probably shouldn't do that either since I haven't seen it or know what they already have.
I like the idea of a basket of necessities and/or a gift card. I think that's probably what I'll go with since it's most likely to be used and not have to be returned. It sounds like the easiest option too!
I know a few people that have been using "Babylist" which is a registry to what they want from all different places. So if you really want to buy off a registry, go to your search bar and type in:
babyli.st
If that doesn't work, I agree with PPs - GCs since you don't know if they're going to use cloth or disposable.
I feel very strongly about not giving lotions or creams.
How about a nice thermometer? Those get used and can be a bit pricey for new parents when they are already getting meds and all the other crummy stuff.
