Hey.  We also have 2 cats.  I did a bunch of reading on taxoplasmosis when I got pregnant.  From everything I read, I decided not to be too worried about it.

If you've had cats for awhile, chances are good you've already been exposed to it, which means it's not a big deal anymore.  Also cats get it from eating little animals, and my cats are indoor cats, and we don't have any rodents.  I have other friends and family members who were pregnant with outdoor cats and never had any problems.  Most of what I read just said to not touch their butts, or the excrement - and I didn't do that anyway :)   We did switch and have my H clean their litter, but that was just because he thought it was a good idea.  The research I did said that wasn't really necessary as long as I washed my hands afterwards.  But it made him feel better, and I certainly wasn't going to argue!  I haven't read up on it since last summer, but after doing that research I just wasn't super concerned about it.

Our cats have been around little kids, and are very gentle with them.  But never around babies, so we'll see how that goes.  They used to sleep with us every night, but about 2 months ago we finally started closing them out of our room.  I felt bad, but it's so hard to sleep when you're pregnant, and I started sleeping so much better when they weren't there.  They create so much heat, and it's just one more thing that might wake you up.  We also figured they need to get used to be closed out of places.  We still let them in our room during the day, so they sleep in our bed then.

They used to love her nursery, but once we got it all set up, we stopped letting them in there without us.  We didn't want them jumping in her crib once she is here, or just walking around when she's napping and waking her up.  And we also wanted to make sure they wouldn't scratch at doors, or make loud noises trying to get in.

We still haven't figured out what we are going to do about her toys.  It's not going to be easy for them to distinguish between things they are allowed to play with, and things they aren't.  But I guess we'll get to that when the time comes.

Well that was pretty long!  But I hope it helps.  Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • Thank you, Molly.  That it really helpful.  I was reading a little more on this myself, but I also have a friend who keeps telling me the old wives' tales.

DH said he will definitely take over the cleaning of their litter box and I won't argue with him on that either :)

Harley has been with us for over two years, and Teddy just joined our family this October. We took him in from our backyard, where him and his siblings were coming over to play and eat. Both of our cats are wild though - they were wild cats when they got taken in. Last year, Harley caught, killed and ate the mouse that was visiting us at nights. Since there were no more rodents coming close to our place, but that's definitely a concern since we live in a rental, and can't really fix every hole in the house.  We are hoping to move to a better, and larger place sometime this year, so hopefully there will be no rodent issues there.

Being the wild souls that they are, neither Harley nor Teddy are too cuddly and just keep it to themselves, so I don't think I will have to worry about them doing something to the baby. But, they also both believe they own our place, so I will definitely need to keep the baby room locked at all times.

Thanks again for sharing this - it's so awesome to have someone to chat with about these things :) I can't wait to be pregnant already!!!
