Teachers, parents, and anyone else that cares...

I'm starting to look into where I want my kids to go to school. We live in Norman. Thing is, I DO NOT want them in public schools. Norman doesn't have any charter schools or anything so I need some nestie knowledge. I don't know a lot about what all my options are. Help me!! I don't mind driving to take them to school in another town, provided that it isn't an hour away....

 TIA for any advice!

  • Hmmm....I'll see what I can find out, and I'm interested to see what others suggest since we're in (roughly) the same area as you.  I have no idea what we'll do once G is school-age.  Why don't you want them in a public school?

  • Are you against ALL public schools or just Norman public schools / the school for which you are in-district?
  • Isn't All Saints a private in Norman? I could be totally wrong here...

  • Or what's that school by Bart Conner on I-35?

  • I know that there are plenty of great schools in Norman with some fantastic teachers. My issue is wsith the public school system in general. I just don't want my kids there, if I can avoid it at all.

All Saints is a private Catholic school in Norman and CCS is a private Christian school. I'd like a school that was more focused on education than religion, I think that comes from the home. I'm sure they are good schools, and I am considering All Saints but it will be hard to make that happen as a single momma.

  • I saw a friend on FB mentioned Veritas Classical Academy last week.  I don't know really know anything about it though.
  • In the far, far future when your kids are middle and high school aged, charters can be an option if you don't mind driving. We have kids that come from as far away as Guthrie, Choctaw and Mustang. There are plenty of south-siders, as well. You just have to transfer into the OKCPS district, but you don't need to move or anything. Yes, you have to get them there, but just letting you know.

I'm still a little confused as to what it is about NPS you dislike so much?

I have a couple of friends who work there. It's really a great concept; however, I don't think it's what you're looking for, pinksprkl. Students go to school two days a week and homeschool the other two-three days a week, and it is a classical Christian education model.

If we were thinking of homeschooling, I would strongly consider Veritas for our children.

  • If you are interested in a secular private school, I would look into Heritage Hall or Westminster. I know scholarships are available at Westminster, not sure about Heritage Hall. I am curious about what your issue is with public schools specifically as opposed to private or charter schools.
  • I teach at CCS.  I think it's a great school! :-)

I've also heard great things about Robin Hill
